Police book man accused of shoplifting $45,000 in products from Ulta Beauty

A man was arrested in 16 separate shoplifting incidents over the past two weeks at the Ulta Beauty on South Claiborne Avenue and Toledano Street, Detective Sgt. Kevin Boswell said Tuesday (June 28) during a NOPD Sixth District public meeting. Demarcus Thomas, 41, was booked into Orleans Justice Center on June 23. He is accused of taking more than $45,000 worth of cosmetics and other beauty products, police said. Officers were in the store investigating the sharp uptick in shoplifting on June 23, said Lt. Kevin Guidry.

Drive-by shooting leaves a man wounded on Louisiana in the Irish Channel

A drive-by shooting was reported near the Irish Channel early Sunday (June 26), according to the New Orleans Police Department. A 46-year-old man was in the 700 block of Louisiana Avenue at 3:20 p.m. when a car approached. Someone inside the car began shooting before the driver sped away.  

The victim was wounded in the gunfire and taken a local hospital by ambulance. Further details were not immediately available. Anyone with information is urged to call the NOPD Sixth District station at 504-658-6060 to speak to a detective, or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 to leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward.

Opening soon on Oak Street, Sukeban offers the taste and experience of a Japanese pub

Chef Jacqueline Blanchard has a passion for Japanese culture and food and will be sharing that passion at her restaurant Sukeban, set to open on Oak Street in July. The name, Sukeban, means “boss girl” or “delinquent girl,” a term used for the girl gangs that formed in Japan in the 1970s and ’80s. Oak Street’s “boss girl,” Blanchard, grew up in Assumption Parish along Bayou Lafourche and is a veteran of some of the nation’s most highly acclaimed restaurants. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in culinary arts from Nicholls State University, she moved to California to work in the kitchens of the French Laundry and Bouchon in Napa Valley. From there, she worked her way across the country to Frasca Food & Wine in Boulder, Colorado, and then to Blue Hill at Stone Barns in New York.

Roadwork officials to answer questions at District B ‘Coffee on Your Corner’

The city’s Neighborhood Engagement Office is hosting representativea from the Department of Public Works’ RoadworkNOLA: Nakia Polk, director of Special Projects & Strategic Engagement Office of Capital Improvement and Christopher Lloyd, outreach manager for the city’s Capital Improvement Program will be there. Polk and Lloyd will provide updates and answer questions about infrastructure projects in District B.

District B residents can bring their questions and concerns to a “Coffee on Your Corner” event on Thursday (June 30) from 10 to 11:30 a.m. It will be held in the Large Meeting room of the Keller Community Center, 4300 S.
