NOPD announces change of command in the Sixth District

Capt. Ronnie Stevens has retired from the New Orleans Police Department after commanding the Sixth District since 2014. Stevens is replaced by Capt. Preston Bax, who most recently served as assistant commander of the Fourth District in Algiers. The Sixth District covers the Central City, Garden District and Irish Channel neighborhoods. Before he took over as commander of the Sixth District, Stevens supervised investigations in the First District, which covers Mid-City and Treme, and in the Seventh District in New Orleans East.  His 23-year NOPD career also included stints in the Special Operations Division’s Tactical Unit, Bomb Squad and Marine Unit. “Capt. Stevens has been a great colleague and friend during our time together in the NOPD,” said NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson in a press release.

Sobriety checkpoints planned for Wednesday night

The NOPD’s Traffic Division will conduct an upcoming sobriety checkpoint within Orleans Parish. The checkpoint will be in operation from 9 p.m. on Wednesday (March 18) through Thursday (March 19) at 5 a.m.
During this time, motorists will experience minimal delays at the checkpoint and should have the proper documentation available if requested by officers (proof of vehicle insurance, driver’s license, etc.)

‘There will be some changes’: NOPD chief to meet with krewe captains on safety

New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Shaun Fergusen said the NOPD will meet with the mayor’s Mardi Gras advisory committee, krewe captains and others to review Carnival safety. “We lost two lives this Carnival season,” he said during a press conference on Monday. “It’s very disheartening.” During the Nyx parade on Wednesday, Belinda ‘Puggy’ Carmouche, 58, was run over and killed by the second section of tandem float on Magazine Street. Then, on Saturday night, Joseph Sampson, 58, was fatally struck when he got between two units of a three-section Endymion float at South Galvez and Canal Street. After Sampson’s death, the mayor and public safety officials outlawed tandem floats for the rest of the season, sending krewes scrambling to break up floats and find additional tractors and drivers.

NOPD to set up sobriety checkpoint

The NOPD’s Traffic Division will conduct a sobriety checkpoint this weekend at a location within Orleans Parish. The checkpoint will be in effect beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 21, and concluding at 5 a.m. on Saturday, June 22. Motorists who encounter this checkpoint will experience minimal delays and should have the proper documentation available if requested – this includes proof of insurance, driver’s license and vehicle registration.

Prytania CVS robbery defendant held on $1.15 million bond

Richard Sansbury, the first of two men arrested for Monday’s armed robbery and shootout that left a New Orleans police officer wounded at an Uptown CVS drug store, made his first appearance in Orleans Parish Magistrate Court on Tuesday morning. Booked with armed robbery with a firearm, two counts of false imprisonment with a weapon, and three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, Stansbury had a bond of $1.15 million set by Orleans Parish Magistrate Judge Harry Cantrell. Sansbury remains in police custody. “I commend Judge Cantrell for … seeing this defendant for what he is: a dangerous, violent offender willing to shoot our police officers, who has no business freely walking our streets,” District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro said.

NOPD officer shot in shoulder on Prytania

The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a shooting that left an officer wounded early Monday. A call reporting a robbery in the 4900 block of Prytania Street was received at 6:07 a.m. on Monday, June 17. The call was dispatched at 6:08 a.m. Second District officers were on the scene at 6:10 a.m.

Three minutes later a signal 108, indicating an officer in need of assistance and whose life is in danger, went out over the air. As the officers were entering the CVS drugstore on Prytania, a perpetrator opened fire, striking one of the responding officers in the left shoulder. The wounded officer was taken to University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition Monday afternoon.

The New Orleans Police Department held a final salute for retired Commander Doug Eckert on Friday in front of the Second District station. Eckert passed away June 10. Eckert ended his 22-year career with the NOPD at 56 on June 9 as commander of the Second District. He had worked his way up through the ranks since joining the department in 1997. He became a sergeant in 2002, a lieutenant in 2012 and commander in 2014.

Commander of NOPD Second District dies one day after retirement

A day after Doug Eckert retired from his position as commander of the Second District, the respected New Orleans Police Department veteran died of cancer, according to social media posts by the NOPD and other law-enforcement agencies. “It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of Retired Commander Doug Eckert of the Second District. Commander Eckert passed away last night after a long hard battle with cancer. Each of us not only grieves at the passing of a tremendous individual but also for the loss his family suffers,” states the NOPD Second District Facebook page on Monday morning. Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro posted: “New Orleans suffered another huge loss Monday night with the passing of Cmdr. Doug Eckert, truly one of NOPD’s finest.
