The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a shooting that left an officer wounded early Monday.

A call reporting a robbery in the 4900 block of Prytania Street was received at 6:07 a.m. on Monday, June 17. The call was dispatched at 6:08 a.m. Second District officers were on the scene at 6:10 a.m.

Three minutes later a signal 108, indicating an officer in need of assistance and whose life is in danger, went out over the air.

As the officers were entering the CVS drugstore on Prytania, a perpetrator opened fire, striking one of the responding officers in the left shoulder. The wounded officer was taken to University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition Monday afternoon.

The three responding officers returned fire, wounding both suspects. One suspect was apprehended at the scene and transported to a local hospital. The second suspect fled into the surrounding neighborhood.

Several units in the area converged on the scene and set up a perimeter. Officers from the Special Operations Division searched the area and eventually located the second suspect not far from where the incident occurred.

Two men, ages 18 and 26, were arrested and face charges of attempt murder of a police officer and armed robbery.

The body worn cameras worn by the three responding officers were activated and captured the incident on video, the NOPD said. The video will be available for viewing within 10 days, according to policy initiated by Superintendent Shaun Ferguson.

Federal and independent monitors were on scene during the incident and were briefed as events transpired, police said.

The three responding officers have two, three, and four years of experience with NOPD.
