Uptown police investigating string of armed robberies, afternoon shooting

A string of armed robberies stretched across the city and a man survived a volley of bullets on Delachaise Street in the Milan area in a weekend that showed an unusual amount of gunplay in Uptown neighborhoods, police said Wednesday. The first two robberies came Friday evening, back-to-back within 20 minutes, said Sgt. Shaun Ferguson of the NOPD Second District persons-crimes division. In the 500 block of Broadway, a couple reported that a group of men approached them, showed a gun, and demanded their belongings, Ferguson said. Police found several of their credit cards in the same block that night, and found their keys nearby the next day.

Milan-area shooting under investigation

A volley of bullets fired Thursday evening near an intersection in the Milan neighborhood left a man with a gunshot wound to the ankle, and police are investigating the case despite his lack of cooperation, authorities said Friday. The victim told police he was standing near the intersection of General Taylor and Loyola streets when he was approached by a mask-wearing stranger who began shooting at him, said New Orleans Police Department Lt. Mike Montalbano of the Second District’s investigative unit. At least 11 rounds were fired, but the victim was only hit once in the right ankle, Montalbano said. The victim is recovering but being “totally uncooperative” with investigators, who believe he may have known his assailant, Montalbano said. Anyone with information should call the Second District at 658-6020.

Police: Burglary rash solved, but bicycle-based robberies continue

Uptown-area police believe they have solved one problem this week – a string of home burglaries in the area – but the area is still plagued by another recent trend, late-night bicycle-riding robbers. The bulk of the home break-ins had taken place in the Milan area, said Capt. Darryl Albert, commander of the New Orleans Police Department’s Uptown-based Second District. Several had also taken place across Louisiana Avenue in the Garden District area of the NOPD Sixth District, leading police from both districts to collaborate on bringing the burglars in. “These burglaries were running us crazy for a while,” Albert said at the second district’s weekly meeting Wednesday. Albert said that over the last week he assigned dedicated specific officers to the Milan area and instructed them to watch for vehicles large enough to transport the big-ticket items the burglars were stealing, such as large-screen TVs.

Police: Attempt to ditch gun leads to new charges for felon

A 21-year-old with a prior felony drug conviction was charged  with possessing a gun stolen from a car in January after officers saw him trying to get rid of it last week, police said. Regis Grimes, 21, pulled a gun from under his shirt and tossed it into an alley near an abandoned house at 3519 S. Saratoga St. in the Milan neighborhood on Monday, Aug. 23, while officers were watching, according to a New Orleans Police Department news release. When officers found the gun, they determined that it had been stolen in January in an auto burglary at A.P. Tureaud and North Tonti streets, the release states.

Alleged tool thief arrested after auto break-ins in Milan

An alleged tool thief was arrested with the spoils of his crimes still in his hands after two early Friday auto burglaries in the Milan neighborhood, police said.Officers on patrol spotted Henry D. Foster, 47, bleeding from the hand and carrying tool boxes as he walked in the 3400 block of Baronne Street shortly after 3 a.m. Friday, and stopped him for questioning, according to a NOPD email alert. They determined the tool boxes came from two different auto burglaries that had just happened, one in the 1900 block of General Pershing and one in the 4000 block of Baronne, the alert said. Foster is charged with two counts each of simple burglary and illegal possession of stolen things, according to the Orleans Parish sheriff’s office. He remained in jail Monday in lieu of a total $60,000 bond.
