This Week at The Broad: So long 2016! Hello 2017!

We can’t believe that this year has gone so quickly. Twelve months ago, we didn’t even have screens in place, let alone movies to show. Now we’ve shown dozens of films to thousands of people and had a blast in the process. It has been a roller coaster ride and we don’t plan on getting off any time soon. SING, FENCES, ROGUE ONE, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA will be here for your New Years festivities. We had quite a busy weekend and look forward to having you visit us one last time in 2016.

This Week at The Broad: ‘Rogue One’ and ‘Manchester by the Sea’

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, we wanted to show you Star Wars. And this week at The Broad, we open ROGUE ONE. The Star Wars universe has seen many side entries over the last 39 years. We’ve had Ewok adventures and Holiday Specials and animated TV shows galore. But ROGUE ONE is the first side story to have wide critical acclaim. Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes, it tells the story behind the stealing of the Death Star plans leading to the original Star Wars in 1977.

Let’s cut to the chase. FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM & MOONLIGHT open this week and we all know how excited everyone is to see both of them. There’s not much in common with these two films except the number of phone calls and emails we’ve received about them. Your voices have been heard and we expect this weekend to break all sorts of attendance records. ARRIVAL has defied our lofty expectations to be as big as a hit as DOCTOR STRANGE. And while the former will be staying around we have to say goodbye to the Doctor this Tuesday, but for a good reason. MOANA will be coming this Wednesday for your family’s enjoyment this Thanksgiving weekend. This week brings two highly-anticipated films being led by two world-class actresses, with Amy Adams in the Sci-Fi film ARRIVAL and Rebecca Hall in the true-life movie, CHRISTINE. CERTAIN WOMEN, THE HANDMAIDEN, and DOCTOR STRANGE all stick around for another week, and we’re even adding additional showtimes for THE HANDMAIDEN due to overwhelming demand from our audience. ARRIVAL is the kind of rare science fiction film that comes once in a generation. The kind of deep exploration of human nature brought about by our sudden realization that there is more to humanity than humans. CHRISTINE is the true-life tale of one of the most shocking moments in television history. This film however takes a step back from that fateful moment to tell the story of the lady whose passion for the news was only overshadowed by her internal demons.

There’s no doubt about it: this week’s lineup is very eclectic. We’ve got BOO! A MADEA HALLOWEEN, GIRL ASLEEP, and DENIAL opening this week, while QUEEN OF KATWE, AMERICAN HONEY, and BIRTH OF A NATION all return this week for those who missed out the first time around. GIRL ASLEEP has been talked about in our office since the very first moment we saw the trailer. It might be unfair to label it as Australia’s answer to Napoleon Dynamite, but if you’re looking to explain to your friends what it’s like it is a good shorthand answer.

“Jonah Stands Up” film awarded for portrayal of comedian, activist, mayoral candidate

Even the death of her subject did not discontinue the message of director Hannah Engelson’s documentary about Uptown resident, comedian and disabilities advocate Jonah Bascle, which won a special jury mention at this year’s New Orleans Film Festival. “My original intention was just to give a well-rounded picture of this person and I think I still accomplished that,” Engelson said. Engelson met Bascle in November 2010, after Bascle had earlier in the year run for mayor to bring awareness to the lack of services in New Orleans for disabled residents. They met at a meetup for a film group. “He told me he was making a documentary about himself and that I could help.

This week at The Broad, we’ve decided to bring something small from a major studio, and something major from a small studio. Disney’s QUEEN OF KATWE is one of those truly great inspirational sports movies, but instead of soccer or hockey, you have the universal sport of chess. Starring David Oyelowo (SELMA) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 YEARS A SLAVE) we can not recommend this movie highly enough. That being said, it will be playing a limited schedule, so we encourage you to check our showtimes and make some time out of your schedule this next week. A24 has been a valuable partner with us, helping us screen such titles as THE WITCH, SWISS ARMY MAN, and the current box office record holder here THE LOBSTER.

Burke Park in Irish Channel to host “Zootopia” Movies in the Park night

The city’s Movies in the Park series comes to the Irish Channel tonight (Friday, Sept. 16) with a free screening of Disney’s “Zootopia” at Burke Playground in the Irish Channel. The movie will begin in the park at 2524 Annunciation Street as sunset approaches around 6:45 p.m., but the New Orleans Recreation Department Commission encourages families to arrive early for activities with fitness instructors from Fit NOLA. Lawn chairs, blankets and picnic items are welcome, but pets, alcohol, drugs, smoking and weapons are not allowed. In the event of bad weather, the movie will be shown at the Lyons Center instead.
