This Mardi Gras we saw a lot of New Orleanians taking the time to make their own fabulous costumes from scratch. ricRACK, a sewing and textile recycling non-profit, played a huge role not only providing fabrics and supplies, but also teaching sewing and costume construction classes. Putting the focus on community, ricRACK — a place to learn how to sew, create, grow, imagine, re-use, sustain, and succeed — has championed interactive sewing and construction classes for kids and adults of all ages. Its sewing classes and crafting camps for kids also highlight the need for more awareness surrounding fast fashion and ways to extend the life of one’s wardrobe. Anyone can visit the non-profit in Central City to learn more about the textiles we use every day, and ways we can change our shopping habits and creative outlets to ease the burden fast fashion has on our planet.

New Orleans Book Festival at Tulane University announces full schedule for inaugural literary celebration (sponsored)

The New Orleans Book Festival at Tulane University announced today its much-anticipated lineup and complete schedule for its inaugural event, which will take place March 10-12, on Tulane University’s Uptown campus. The book festival is free and open to the public. Among the national bestselling authors participating are Malcolm Gladwell, Michael Lewis, John Grisham, Imani Perry, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., Bakari Sellers, Don Lemon, Jon Meacham, Charles Blow, Clint Smith, Cleo Wade, Sarah M. Broom and David Brooks. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

New power substation: Our city must act now (sponsored)

The power supply that operates the city’s water-related infrastructure, including pumps and pump stations, is obsolete, unreliable and expensive to maintain. Without a dependable power supply, New Orleans is at serious and constant risk for flooding and boil water advisories that bad weather events can cause. A well-developed plan exists to reduce the future risks and disruptive impacts of the failure of the city’s vulnerable water-related power system: a dedicated substation, which will provide power to the city’s pumps. Development of the substation is well underway, with projected completion in 2023 if we act now. Unfortunately, the project is in danger of stalling or even unraveling if the city does not quickly secure $30 million in funding.
