Danae Columbus: In hurricane season, threat of flooding never far from the city of New Orleans

The New Orleans City Council’s budget hearing today focuses on capital improvements, public works and other drainage improvements that were paid for this year with emergency funds. When also factoring in yesterday’s fire at the Sewerage & Water Board’s Claiborne Avenue main pumping station, it’s easy to see why citizens are becoming more skeptical about the ability of our mayor and his S&WB team to protect us against flooding.

Unity of New Orleans hosts Ayurveda lecture this weekend

Lecturer Meghan Hays, will visit Unity of New Orleans Spiritual Center to speak on one of the world’s oldest known forms of medicine: Ayurveda.

The lecture takes place on Sunday, Sept. 10 form 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at Unity, located at 3722 St. Charles Ave.

NOLA Aikido will hold its annual Open House this Saturday, Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Our Chief Instructor, Robert Brian Levy and students will provide a demonstration of the Japanese martial art of Aikido.

We’ll be available to answer any questions and will offer an opportunity for prospective students to experience Aikido for themselves. Refreshments will be served.

NOLA Aikido is located in Mid-City, and is dedicated to teaching traditional Aikido to students of all ages. Both adult and children’s classes are offered.
