Two dogs, three cats rescued in Irish Channel fire that displaces three households

Two dogs and three cats were rescued from a burning triplex in the Irish Channel on Thursday (Oct. 6), the New Orleans Fire Department reported. The fire displaced three residents. Firefighters were called to the wood-frame building at 822-28 Toledano at 12:39 p.m. Nine units with 29 firefighters arrived at 12:44 p.m. and found a blaze extending from the attic of 822 Toledano. It quickly spread through the attic to the other units.

Roadwork ahead: South Carrollton closure between Fig and Earhart postponed (updated)

Editor’s note: The city announced on Oct. 3 that the closure has been postponed until further notice. 
South Carrollton Avenue will close to traffic between Fig Street and Earhart Boulevard beginning Monday (Oct. 3) at 7 a.m. and lasting through 5 p.m. on Dec. 5. The city’s Department of Public Works contractor Wallace C. Drennan, Inc. will install new water lines and drainage as part of the Marlyville-Fontainebleau Group C infrastructure improvement project.

Roadwork ahead: St. Charles Avenue to close between Fern and Burdette

Beginning on Monday (Sept. 26) at 7 a.m. the Department of Public Works contractor will temporarily close the westbound travel lane of St. Charles Avenue between Burdette Street and Fern Street for about four weeks to accommodate waterline installation work. During this time, westbound traffic on St. Charles Avenue will be detoured either south onto Broadway Street and rerouted to Leake Avenue or north onto Broadway Street and rerouted to South Claiborne Avenue.

Austerlitz Baptist Church heavily damaged in fire

A three-alarm fire broke out in the Austerlitz Baptist Church on Friday morning (Sept. 9), the New Orleans Fire Department reported. Firefighters arrived at 9:24 a.m. to find heavy smoke billowing from the rear of the church at 819 Austerlitz St., a block from Magazine Street in the Touro-Bouligny neighborhood. Two people said saw a “ball of fire” coming from a pipe when they turned on the lights, the NOFD said. The fire climbed through the walls into the attic.

Suspects sought in reckless driving of ATVs on Carrollton and Earhart

The New Orleans Police Department is requesting assistance from the public in locating and identifying multiple suspects seen operating non-street legal vehicles recklessly on city streets on Aug. 21. At about 5:50 p.m., the suspects pictured below were observed operating multiple ATVs and off-road dirt bikes in a reckless manner near the South Carrollton Avenue and Earhart Boulevard. The vehicles were observed to be traveling northbound on South Carrollton Avenue and ran a red light at the intersection. Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact NOPD Second District detectives at 504-658-6020 or call anonymously to Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans at 504-822-1111.

Early morning fire displaces three Jena Street residents

A fire in the 1800 block of Jena Street displaced three people early Sunday (Aug. 28), the New Orleans Fire Department reported. A 911 call reported the fire at 5:10 a.m. The NOFD arrived at the scene and found flames emanating from the rear of single-story shotgun double at 1818-20 Jena Street. The residents had all evacuated safely. The firefighters determined that the blaze began in a backyard shed and quickly spread to the house.

Complaints against ‘nightmare’ landlord keep piling up

New Orleans renter Jessica Spraggins had a hard time sleeping in her family’s three-bedroom, $2,600-a-month apartment after her bedroom ceiling partially collapsed. 

“When the city gets rain, so does our bedroom,” Spraggins said. 

The hole hadn’t always been there, she said, but rain leaking from the roof caused the collapse on May 31. Spraggins messaged her landlord, Laura Russell, that very day. Russell responded that she would send someone to look at the damage, according to screenshots of their text communications. Nobody ever came, Spraggins said. 

What did come was an eviction notice. Russell began eviction proceedings June 16 to remove the family from Apartment B at 7800 St.

Four-alarm fire damages two houses near St. Charles Avenue in Central City

A house on First and Baronne streets burst into flames early Tuesday (July 19) and spread to a two-story double next door, according to the New Orleans Fire Department. A 911 call reported the fire just before 2:30 a.m. The first NOFD unit on the scene found an apparently blighted building heavily engulfed in flames that had extended to neighboring homes. They struck a second alarm at at 2:33 a.m. and a third alarm at 2:40 a.m.

As the fire spread to the two-story wood framed double next door, firefighters looked for the occupants. The building’s owner stated that he’d contacted the residents and that no one was home at the time. A small dog was reportedly rescued from the burning double.

Roadwork ahead: City extends detours for Leake Avenue closure

On June 14, the Department of Public Works contractor, Hard Rock Construction closed the 7200 to 7500 blocks of Leake Avenue to vehicular traffic for approximately two weeks to conduct waterline repairs. Today (June 27), the decision was made to extend this closure for another two weeks to address newly discovered waterline damage. The anticipated completion date for all repairs is July 15. Barricades and traffic detours will be placed on Broadway and Magazine streets to direct traffic toward St. Charles and South Carrollton avenues, as well as St.

Toddler dies from gunshot wounds in Hollygrove

A 2-year-old boy was killed by gunfire at a Hollygrove home on Wednesday evening (June 22), the New Orleans Police Department reported. At 6:18 p.m., police received a medical call for assistance at a home in the 8600 block of Apple Street. First responders arrived at the location and found it to be open with no one inside. Shortly thereafter, police learned a 2-year-old with a gunshot wound had arrived at a local hospital from the Hollygrove residence in a private vehicle. The child was then transported via EMS to Children’s Hospital, where he was declared dead
