Two teens arrested in armed robberies of Tulane students

Two teenage boys were arrested on Tuesday (Jan. 24) in the armed robberies of six Tulane University students, according to the New Orleans Police Department. The two separate robberies occurred about 20 minutes apart early on Jan. 15. The first was on Hillary and Zimpel streets just before 1 a.m. The second occurred in the 1100 block of Hillary at 1:17 a.m., police said.

It put a spotlight on the fear, frustration and anger of thousands of New Orleanians who recognize that the city has probably never been so unsafe. Teenager shot to death in Central City

An 18-year-old was shot to death Wednesday morning in Central City, the New Orleans Police Department reported. Media reports say his family witnessed the fatal shooting. The New Orleans Police Department’s Homicide Section is investigating a shooting that left a male teenager dead. The offense occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m., at the intersection of Rev. John Raphael Jr Way and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. According to investigators, Sixth District officers responding to a call of a shooting found the victim inside a vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Fatal shooting reported in Lower Garden District

A man was shot to death in the Lower Garden District early Tuesday (Jan. 17), the New Orleans Police Department reported. Sixth District officers responding to a report of a shooting at Erato and Constance streets discovered the victim at about 5:30 a.m. He had sustained a gunshot wound and was declared dead at the scene. No further details were available. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will determine official cause of death and release the victim’s name upon completion of an autopsy and notification of his family.

Why are so many New Orleanians and visitors getting shot and even killed recently? The answer is fairly simple. People, especially our young people, are turning to guns to resolve the disputes that used to be handled less dramatically by cooler heads. Over the past few years, retaliatory violence has become as much a part of New Orleans culture as red beans and rice. We can’t arrest our way out of New Orleans’ crime problem.

Suspects sought in attempted ATM theft

The New Orleans Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying and locating two suspects wanted in connection with the attempted theft at the Regions Bank on Tchoupitoulas Street. At about 4 a.m.  on Tuesday (Jan. 10), two men in dark hooded jackets were captured on the bank’s surveillance video. They appeared to be trying to break into an ATM in the bank’s drive-thru. They were reportedly not successful in their attempt to gain access to the contents of the ATM.

Two carjackings and a shooting were reported in Uptown neighborhoods during the weekend, according to the New Orleans Police Department. A 47-year-old man was carjacked early Monday (Jan. 9) near the Pontchartrain Expressway exit on Tchoupitoulas Street.
