Dryades Public Market has been a favorite space of mine for years. The news of its closing, reported by NOLA.com, was unexpected, and a bit saddening. I’ve spent many lunchtimes in the mezzanine space with my laptop in front of me and a deli sandwich on the side. Chef Allison was almost always there to greet me when the hot food bar opened for lunch and the first batch of mac-and-cheese made its presence known. The managers were gracious, open and willing to try different ways to serve quality food options to its neighbors.

City Reminder: Late fee forgiveness on tickets ends September 3

Residents have until September 3—less than two weeks—to pay certain city fees without penalties or additional fees. The Amnesty Late Fee Forgiveness Program is a three-month program by Mayor Cantrell and the Department of Finance meant to help clear past-due accounts for residents with parking and camera tickets, sales and hotel/motel taxes, code enforcement violations, and library fees. “We appreciate the way our residents have stepped up and taken advantage of this opportunity to clear their outstanding accounts and get a little of their fair share in the process. We’ve seen impressive response across all four areas,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell in a statement to the press. “With the deadline coming, we don’t anyone to miss out.”
According to the Mayor’s office, this is how much locals have saved after the first two months:

$1,021,125 in parking citations
$397,069.49 in sales and hotel/motel taxes
$31,654.50 in code enforcement violations
$113,696.37 in library fees

“We’re seeing more and more residents engaging with this process, whether online, on the phone, by mail, or in person here at City Hall,” said Chief Financial Officer Norman White in a statement to the press.

City launches affordable health care initiative for hospitality workers

Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation (NOTMC), in partnership with 504HealthNet, have launched a program to provide New Orleans hospitality workers access to high-quality, affordable health care at over 50 sites around the city. The new Healthy Hospitality Initiative debuted on Tuesday, August 6, after tourism and health care agencies collaborated with hospitality workers over the past year to ensure the program addresses their needs. The initiative includes a new website, extended clinic hours, and a dedicated team that works directly with the city’s hospitality workers. There are 17 participating health care organizations, operating 58 clinic sites, and one hospital system with five sites that are a part of this initiative. Here are the Healthy Hospitality Initiative sites in the Uptown area:

Homicide victim found in crashed car on Amelia Street

New Orleans police are investigating a homicide that took place in the 2200 block of Amelia Street early Saturday morning (July 27). At around 1:52 a.m., Sixth District officers responded to a call of a vehicle that crashed into a wood utility pole. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male victim inside of a gray Chevrolet Camaro suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper torso. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators are still currently in the process of gathering evidence and information to identify the person(s) responsible in this incident, as well as a motive.

It is a celebration of reading and exploring all that the Library has to offer. While the program focuses on fun for all ages, there is a very serious reason that children and teens should participate.

Dinner Club series for authentic Creole cuisine begins with The Munch Factory

Eat NOLA Noir, hosts of Black Restaurant Week, and the New Orleans Multicultural Tourism Network will kick off “Dinner Club” showcasing “authentic creole cuisine” from around the city. The club series will visit a new restaurant each month, starting today (July 1) with The Munch Factory in the Lower Garden District. “Join us as we explore the culinary scene in New Orleans and try new dishes, meet new people, and get full,” Eat NOLA Noir wrote of the event series. The dinner will include a full serving of authentic Creole cuisine and unlimited buffet of menu items. The event takes place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 1901 Sophie Wright Place. Dinner tickets and free club memberships are available at Eat NOLA Noir. Those interested can also sign up for information about upcoming Dinner Club meet-ups and food pop-ups.

Xavier receives grant to support community college student pipeline

Xavier University of Louisiana has received a three-year, $500,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support initiatives designed to expand its community college student pipeline and to establish a new summer bridge program. The grant will fund ongoing university efforts to engage and enroll more community college students by streamlining its transfer administrative process, clarifying course and major requirements, and reducing any course-related hindrances to graduating in four-years. It will also fund a new pilot summer immersion program, Mellon Humanities Summer Scholars Initiative at Xavier, which will provide potential community college transfer students an opportunity to “test drive” the university prior to matriculating. During the six-week residential bridge program, specifically target potential transfers in the humanities, participants will benefit from experiential classroom learning, an introduction to research, mentoring by college faculty, counseling, and career development. Upon successful completion of the program, the students are guaranteed conditional admission to Xavier after completing their two-year degree requirements.
