Mothers to share stories on gun violence at Ashé Power House Theater

Four mothers who have lost their children to gun violence will share their stories and plans to help their communities end violence Thursday in commemoration of the first year of The Mother’s Circle, part of the Welcome Table New Orleans initiative of the Mayor’s Office. The event starts at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Ashé Power House Theater at 1731 Baronne Street, and is free and open to the public. One can RSVP by contacting info@welcometableneworleans.org.

Casa Borrega to host third annual Day of the Dead celebration

Casa Borrega will be celebrating Dia de los Muertos early this year with a free masquerade event featuring live Latin dance music by Freddy Omar con Su Banda this Halloween. Food and drink will be on sale, and the entire restaurant will be turned into a multimedia Dia de los Muertos installation. The Dia de los Muertos celebration will take place Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. at Casa Borrega, located on 1719 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard.

Thibodeaux School of Music to host spooky fun night tonight

The Thibodeaux School of Music is hosting a spooky fun night for children of all ages today, Oct. 29. There will be trick-or-treating in the Thibodeaux classrooms, and the Thibodeaux faculty will be playing spooky musical sounds. The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Thibodeaux School of Music, located on 2436 Valence Street. Entrance is $10 per family, which includes up to four members.

NOPD Second District to host fifth annual toy drive

Starting today, Oct. 26, the New Orleans Police Department’s Second District is looking for toy donations or donations of $5 to benefit children at the Lafayette Academy Charter School. The toy drive will run until Dec. 11. Those interested in dropping off unwrapped gift items or donating $5 for the toy drive can go to the NOPD Second District Station, located on 4317 Magazine Street.

Kiwanis Club yard sale to benefit scholarship, community projects

 

The Kiwanis Club of Third District is a civic club that holds weekly meetings at Maple Street Cafe. They will hold a yard sale this Saturday, Oct. 24 to fund scholarships and community projects. 6th annual NAMI Walk Second Line to benefit mental illness

 

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is holding a second line in Audubon Park this Saturday, Oct. 24 to raise funds and awareness for mental illness. NAMI will be accepting donations of gently used and new shoes to send to developing nations as well. The second line benefit event will take place at 9 a.m. at Audubon Park’s Shelter #10 and Newman Bandstand, located on 6500 Magazine Street. The 1.8 mile second line will begin at 10 a.m.

Alliance Française to host an apéro francophone happy hour at New Orleans Jazz Market

Alliance Française is inviting the community to an apéro francophone at New Orleans Jazz Market this Thursday, Oct. 22. The event is open and free to the public and an opportunity to practice French and learn about options for learning to speak French. The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. in The Bolden Bar at the New Orleans Jazz Market, located on 1436 O.C. Haley Boulevard. Alliance Française staff members will be at the event to answer inquiries for those interested in taking language classes.

The Encore Shop to host annual Fall Into Fashion fundraiser

 

 

The Encore Shop is a women’s resale clothing shop that supports the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. The Encore Shop is having a fundraiser this Tuesday, Oct. 20, and the event will include a designer boutique, live music, food and drink. The Fall Into Fashion fundraiser will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  at the home of Patricia Brinson and Vernon Brinson, located at 217 Audubon Boulevard. A patron party will take place before from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Uptown neighborhoods schedule park parties, block parties for National Night Out Against Crime

 

Tonight will feature many neighborhoods, churches, and businesses across Uptown hosting block parties to celebrate the National Night Out Against Crime. Some of the biggest celebrations include a park party at the Lawrence Square Basketball Court and 24 Magazine street businesses holding sales and Crime Stoppers give-a-ways. An annual Night Out party will feature the Faubourg Marengo Neighborhood Association joining with the Bouligny Improvement Association this year to throw a park party at the Lawrence Square Basketball Court on the corner of Magazine and Napoleon. The event will feature free food and drink, music by the Tom Leggett Band, and raffle prizes. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., 24 businesses on the 5400-5900 blocks of Magazine Street between Jefferson and Nashville will be open, offering donations from sales to Crime Stoppers products.
