Streetcar accessibility remains elusive for Uptown-based advocate

The efforts of Jonah Bascle, an Uptown resident who ran for mayor last year to draw attention to the lack of accessibility on the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line, form the basis of this week’s cover story in Gambit. Other than promises of committees to study the issue, little progress has been made on Bascle’s suggestion that the newer handicapped-accessible red streetcars be added to the St. Charles Avenue line.

Former Borders site on St. Charles Avenue to become Fresh Market grocery

The address of the former Borders store in the old Bultman funeral home on St. Charles Avenue has been added to the website of Fresh Market as “Coming Soon,” and our partners at WWL-TV have confirmed that the upscale grocer will be the site’s next tenant. The store’s promised amenities include an “old-style butcher shop,” fresh seafood, produce, fresh baked goods, a “European delicatessen,” imported cheese, gourmet coffee and other offerings.

Coliseum Square Association to plan upcoming events Wednesday

The Coliseum Square Association has postponed its September meeting from its usual Monday time until Wednesday to accommodate the city’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance review for the neighborhood, neighborhood leaders said. “The agenda for this month’s meeting includes a presentation from Global Green on their NOLAWise program and planning of the Night Out Against Crime on Oct. 11th and the CSA House Tour on Oct. 16th,” according to the association website. This month’s meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Bridge Lounge, 1201 Magazine Street.

Large oak falls across St. Charles Avenue

A large oak fell across the downtown lane and neutral ground of St. Charles Avenue near Joseph Street on Monday morning, and witnesses said it narrowly missed falling on a passing streetcar. A little after 11 a.m., Lise Anne Werlein was watching through her home’s front window as movers prepared to bring in furniture, when she noticed the roof of a passing downtown-bound streetcar strike a low-hanging branch of the tree. The streetcar driver seemed to startled but continued on, said Cornell Johnson and Samuel Williams of Unlimited Moving Services, who were both watching from the street. Moments later — less than a minute, by Johnson’s estimate — the tree suddenly came crashing down, the witnesses said.

Resolution to T.J. Quills liquor-license issues could come Tuesday

Negotiations with the city that would allow a popular Maple Street college bar to retain its liquor license could come to a close at Tuesday’s meeting of the city’s Alcohol Beverage Control Board. Following allegations of underage drinking at TJ Quills bar on Maple, the city has been crafting a set of operating conditions for the bar that would address neighbors’ complaints about litter and noise around the bar. In July, city officials said they were close to an agreement with the bar, but August’s ABO meeting was canceled, so TJ Quills is now on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting, which begins at 1 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall. Other Uptown establishments remaining on the ABO agenda include the Uptown Deli/Uptown Daiquiris/Discount City cluster of businesses at 2013 South Claiborne, the Key Food Store at 2600 Louisiana Avenue, the Precinct bar at 1379 Annunciation, Daiquiri Island on Earhart Boulevard, and Honey Bee’s Place at 2714 Felicity.

Zoning map changes up for review at Uptown-based town halls this week

The zoning laws intended to guide the development of New Orleans for the foreseeable future will be the subject of two town-hall style meetings specifically focused on Uptown neighborhoods on Monday and Wednesday evenings, officials said. Draft zoning maps based on the city’s master plan have been released, as well as the current changes requested to them. Some of the changes are general — such as Councilwoman Stacy Head’s request for a review of the categories in the Lower Garden District — while others are much more specific. Some also represent next steps in various Uptown zoning issues, including the Lorraine Apartments on St. Charles, a proposed Japanese convenience store on South Carrollton, and the future of an apartment complex at State and Tchoupitoulas.
