As Cypress Academy enters its third year in the fall of 2017, the young charter school will move out of its temporary home at Touro Synagogue on St. Charles Avenue for the John Dibert school building in Mid-City, the school announced.
Cypress was the third charter school in recent years to launch in the Touro space before moving to another neighborhood, following ENCORE Academy and Bricolage before it. The John Dibert school — which is temporarily housing the International School of Louisiana this year — will be the permanent home for Cypress, the school said.

Cypress Academy, a public charter school currently located in Uptown New Orleans is constantly growing and discovering new ways to meet the academic, social, and developmental needs of students throughout New Orleans.
For the 2017-2018 school year, Cypress Academy welcomes all Kindergarten through 3rd Grade students. In addition, it brings great pleasure to announce that Cypress Academy will take permanent residence at the John Dibert building in Mid-City, located at 4217 Orleans Ave, New Orleans, LA 70119.
Dr. Bob Berk, Cypress Academy’s Head of School, is pleased with the new location as the historic building, with large classrooms, is centrally located in a wonderful Mid-City neighborhood blocks away from Bayou St. John and City Park. “The Dibert building will allow us to add to our vision of anchoring Cypress within a vibrant community that is central to families across the city. The International School had asked the Orleans Parish School Board to allow it to remain at Dibert, as well as add the former Mary Bethune school building in Hollygrove as its third Eastbank site, creating room for a preschool class. ISL has not said what its plans will be now, but its board will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Dibert building.
I am very happy for Cypress Academy. I have heard great things about the school. My middle school child goes to ISL and has been in the Dibert campus since January while renovations are taking place on Camp Street. We like the school very much. The neighborhood is wonderful.
ISL is an A-rated title one type two charter that was formed in 2000. We educate all kinds of kids in French or Spanish and English. We are not a magnet school with selective admissions. We serve all students from Louisiana( currently students from 7 Parishes attend.). Our kids are getting into selective high schools and thriving. We are in desperate need for more space. We are neither an OPSB or an RSD school and are never a priority when offering leases on school properties. ISL had been earnestly looking for space the entire 9 years I have had kids there. My hope is This spring we will get a property and be able to make plans to move there this summer and that we don’t have to try to move middle school back to Camp street. The kids deserve more.
