New Orleans police are investigating several rape cases reported over the weekend, one on Broadway Street and a cluster around St. Charles Avenue, authorities said.

Around 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, a Tulane student was walking in the 1300 block of Broadway Street when she was attacked by a stranger, according to a Tulane University police report.

“An unknown male subject approached her from behind, threw her to the lawn, and sexually assaulted her,” the report states. “A witness observed the attack and shouted at the suspect that he was calling the police and the suspect fled the area towards Claiborne Avenue.”

A surveillance camera captured an image of the suspect, according to the Tulane report, but it has not yet been released to the public. He is described as a 5-foot-7, 150-pound man with a dark skin tone (“black or Hispanic”), wearing skinny blue jeans, a white T-shirt and a low haircut, carrying a blue-steel semi-automatic handgun, the report states.

Two other incidents were reported Sunday evening near St. Charles Avenue, according to the NOPD crime logs. A 17-year-old girl was “sexually assaulted by a known male” near Amelia and St. Charles around 7:40 p.m., and a 19-year-old girl was “sexually assaulted by an unknown male” in the 4000 block of St. Charles (near Constantinople) around 8:15 p.m., the reports state.

Finally, NOPD crime maps also show an aggravated rape under investigation around 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in the 1700 block of Peniston Street, a block off St. Charles. Information about that incident was not included in weekend crime reports, however.

Further information was not available in any of the above cases Monday morning. Anyone with information is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 822-1111 to leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward.
