Rolling today: Femme Fatale, Carrollton, King Arthur, Alla

The first Uptown parade weekend closes out today with a full slate of four crowd-pleasing parades. The National Weather Service predicts perfect parade conditions: sunny with a high near 66 degrees.

Femme Fatale

Established in 2013, the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale presents one of Uptown’s newest parades. This year’s grand marshals are Grammy-winning singer Irma Thomas and Essence Fest producer Gina Charbonnet. The 600-member all-female krewe’s colors are candy-apple red, white and black, and the signature throw is a mirrored compact. Look for Cherchez La Femme, a 40-member dance troupe comprised of krewe members. The 2019 theme is “MKFF Presents Story Time!”

START: 11 a.m. at Napoleon Avenue and Magazine Street
Proceeds on Napoleon to St. Charles Avenue. Then it takes St. Charles to Canal Street to Tchoupitloulas.
END: Tchoupitoulas and Poydras

Carrollton

The Krewe of Carrollton, formed by a group of Oak Street businessmen in 1924, is the city’s fourth oldest Carnival parading organization. It began as a neighborhood event in the Carrollton section of town, moved to Carrollton Avenue in Mid-City, then to its current traditional Uptown route along St. Charles Avenue to Canal Street. Its signature throws include decorated shrimp boots. The parade theme for 2019 is “Treasures of the Sea.”

START: Noon at Jefferson Avenue and Magazine Street
The parade turns right on Magazine, then left on Napoleon before proceeding down St. Charles Avenue to the CBD.
END: Tchoupitoulas Street and Poydras Street

King Arthur

With 1,600 knights on 50 floats, the Krewe of King Arthur parade is the largest of the first Uptown parade weekend. King Arthur formed in 1977 as a West Bank krewe, with help from the Krewe of Choctaw. The knights make their own floats and costumes. Their coveted signature throw is a hand-decorated grail. The theme for this Academy Awards Sunday parade is “And the Arthur Goes to …”

START: 1 p.m. at Jefferson Avenue. and Magazine Street
The parade turns right on Magazine, then left on Napoleon before proceeding down St. Charles Avenue to the CBD.
END: Tchoupitoulas Street and Poydras Street

Alla

The Krewe of Alla takes its name from the abbreviation for its Algiers birthplace (Al., La.), where it formed some 87 years ago. The once all-male krewe, which holds a storied place in New Orleans Carnival history, has moved its parade across the river to the Uptown route and now has a gender-neutral membership policy. The Krewe of Alla hits the road this year with the theme “Are We There Yet?” Its signature throws include hand-decorated genie lamps.

START: 2 p.m. at Napoleon Avenue and Tchoupitoulas Street
The parade takes a right on Napoleon, where it proceeds to St. Charles Avenue into the CBD.
END: Tchoupitoulas and Poydras Street
