The Shell gas station located on South Carrolton Avenue was the scene of three shoplifting incidents earlier this month, according to New Orleans police.

Beer was stolen from the Shell gas station in the 3100 block of South Carrollton three times in two days July 6 and 7, NOPD Lt. Doug Eckert said at last week’s meeting of the Second District ranking officers. Beer was also stolen from the Exxon gas station located in the 3700 block of South Carrollton on July 7, Eckert said.

“For two of the cases, it is the same guy,” NOPD Sgt. Warren Keller said.

Police cannot identify the suspect from the surveillance video, but they do have information on a possible vehicle of the suspect, Keller said.

Also on July 7, a robbery took place at the Circle K gas station in the 6000 block of Magazine Street, according to NOPD Sgt. Jennifer Dupree. Around 2:30 a.m., a man wearing a stocking over his face and gloves demanded alcohol, cash, and cigarettes from the cashier, Dupree said.

Dupree said that the suspect had two plastic bags in his shirt and asked the cashier to fill them with the items. One of the plastic bags fell as the suspect removed it from his shirt, and police have submitted it for DNA, Dupree said.

“This is the first time in a while we have had this many shoplifters,” Keller said.

Sgt. Byron Francois suggested that the Second District get in touch with Xavier University chief of police to help out with shoplifting in that area. In the past, Xavier University police have helped the NOPD prevent similar crimes by making regular checks at stores and gas stations near the university, which helped “knock out” a lot of the crime near the area, Francois said.

“We didn’t have that problem then like we have now,” Francois said.

Francois said that he will get back in communication with Xavier police in an effort to decrease the shoplifting.
