A New Orleans police officer fired a shot at a man holding a gun on Nashville Avenue in Fontainebleau, where an aggravated rape was also reported overnight, authorities said Tuesday morning.

The initial rape call that drew police to the 3800 block of Nashville Avenue (near Fontainebleau Drive) was around 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, according to the initial NOPD report.

“An unknown male answered the door armed with a gun,” the report states. “The officer commanded the subject to drop his weapon. The subject turned towards the officer still holding the gun and the officer fired one (1) round at the subject missing him.”

An aggravated rape was ultimately reported in the block, in which a woman in her 20s was sexually assaulted by an unknown man, states the report in that case, which was was recorded at 4:18 a.m.

[Update:] NOPD spokesman Tyler Gamble issued the following statement around 2 p.m. Tuesday:

Early this morning, NOPD Second District Officer Steven Lewis and Recruit Robert Cravatta responded to a call of a sexual assault in-progress at a home in the 3800 block of Nashville Avenue. After repeated attempts to get someone to answer the door, officers made their way into the home to investigate the reported crime in-progress. When officers got inside, they saw an unknown male armed with a handgun. Officers ordered the male to drop his weapon, and when he refused, Officer Lewis fired one shot at the male. The shot did not strike the male, who at that point, surrendered to police.

During the course of the investigation, officers learned the male lived at the location with a female, who reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted. The victim did not identify the male as the suspect and there was no evidence at the scene that the male had sexually assaulted the victim. The Special Victims Section is actively investigating the report of a sexual assault.

The PIB Force Investigation Team is investigating the use of force by Officer Lewis. Both officers were wearing Body Worn Cameras, which were activated at the time of the incident.

The investigation is on-going and no arrests have been made at this time.

Anyone who has information that can help with the investigation is urged to call the NOPD Second District station at 658-6020 to speak to a detective, or CrimeStoppers at 822-1111 to leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward.
