A man was shot to death along the St. Charles Avenue parade route late Tuesday afternoon in one of three Mardi Gras day shootings that left three people dead and five more injured across the city, New Orleans police said.
Gunfire erupted in the 2400 block of St. Charles Avenue (near Second Street) around 4:30 p.m., after two men got into an argument in the street on the opposite side of the parade route, New Orleans police said.
The shooting victim, a 30-year-old man, was hit in the body and taken to the hospital, but later died from his injuries, police said.
Officers detained a man “believed to have knowledge of the incident” immediately after the shooting, the report states. Early Wednesday morning, homicide investigators announced that they had identified 21-year-old Eddie Dingle as a suspect, and asked for the public’s help locating him.
The fatal shooting on St. Charles Avenue was one of only three around the city on Fat Tuesday. Around 3:15 p.m., a fight broke out among about 10 people on Union Street near Carondelet, and one of the combatants began firing a gun that hit one person in the head and another in the leg, according to the report in that case.
“Both victims were transported by EMS,” the report states. “The victim shot in the head area was reported to be coherent and talking prior to transport.”
Around 8:15 p.m., a group of people driving in the 5400 block of Andry Street in the Lower Ninth Ward were fired upon, and they drove to nearby St. Claude Avenue where police found them. One man was pronounced dead on scene, and a second died from his injuries at the hospital, while three others were found to have been injured in the shooting as well.
