Members of one of Uptown’s newer neighborhood groups, the Faubourg Avart Neighborhood Association, are seeking new members for their board for the coming year, they announced Wednesday night.

Organized in 2013, the Faubourg Avart Neighborhood Association represents the area of Uptown bounded by Prytania, Upperline, Tchoupitoulas and Valmont streets. Since then, the association has met quarterly for updates from city officials on land-use issues, public safety, and particularly historic preservation.
In a brief meeting Wednesday night, founding board member Mark Tullis told the members gathered that the association is seeking nominations for new board members. Nominations will be open for two weeks, then members will vote, and the top seven recipients of vote will be chosen to lead the association.
Tullis said he hopes the incoming board will feature a broad cross section of the neighborhood.
“There’s no doubt that we want to have more representation on the board,” Tullis said.

The association touched on a number of other issues:
- Ramsey Green of the Friends of Wisner Park noted that the New Orleans Recreation Department Commission has closed the softball fields and locked them with chains because of the abundance of dogs being let loose on the sports field. Green said the Friends of Wisner Park plans to place signs urging dog owners to use the official dog park instead of the sports field before city officials reopen the softball fields to the public.
- Members of the association who have been vocal in support of stronger oversight and protections for historic properties briefly discussed the City Council decision to replace the Neighborhood Conservation District Advisory Committee with the Historic District Landmarks Commission. For the Faubourg Avart area and most of Uptown, the HDLC will only govern demolitions, not new construction or renovations — though it will have all that control along the St. Charles and South Carrollton avenue corridors.
