One man was robbed of his keys at gunpoint Wednesday night on Hickory Street by a would-be carjacker who could not drive his standard-transmission vehicle, and another man was robbed of his belongings on Olive Street a few hours later, New Orleans police said.

Around 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, a man in his 20s was getting out of his vehicle in the 8000 block of Hickory Street (near Short Street) when he was confronted by an unknown man with a gun, according to the initial NOPD report.

“The subject demanded the victim’s car keys and he complied,” the report states. “The subject got into the vehicle and could not drive a stick, then he jumped out and fled in an unknown direction.”

Shortly before 3:30 a.m. Thursday, a man in his 30s was standing on the front steps of a home in the 7800 block of Olive Street (between Fern and Lowerline in the Gert Town area) when a man with a ski mask and black hoodie confronted him, according to the report in that case.

“The subject pointed a handgun at the victim’s head and demanded his property,” the report states. “The victim complied, handing over his car keys, cellphone, and wallet. The subject demanded the victim to walk up the block while he fled in an unknown direction.”

Further details were not immediately available in either case. Anyone with information is urged to call the NOPD Second District station at 658-6020 to speak to a detective, or CrimeStoppers at 822-1111 to leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward.
