John Cummings, Loyola alumnus and retired lawyer, will speak at Loyola about the Whitney Plantation Museum he owns and the role of slavery in Louisiana.
This talk will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29 in Nunemaker Auditorium in Loyola’s Monroe Hall.
Cummings created and owns the the Whitney Plantation Museum, the first museum that focuses on the history of American slavery. It is located in Wallace, Louisiana, and once housed the Haydels, one of the largest slaveholding families in the state.
Cummings will be joined by Ibrahima Seck, director of research at the museum. Seck is a member of the Cheikh Anta Diop University history department in Senegal and moved here in 2012 to help with the plantation.
