The Kelsey Bradley Favrot Memorial 5K run/walk on Sunday morning in Audubon Park will help raise money for the creation of a new center for the treatment of brain cancer.
A kids’ run will start at 8 a.m., followed by the adults’ run at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in Audubon Park. For details, see below:
Runners and walkers of all ages can support brain cancer treatment in New Orleans by participating in the Kelsey Bradley Favrot Memorial 5k run/walk on Sunday, October 2 in Audubon Park. Proceeds will go toward establishing a center at LSU Neurosurgery to support the treatment of brain cancer patients in New Orleans, Kelsey’s wish was that patients could receive the quality care they need without having to travel out of state.
Kelsey’s wish is coming true. The LSU Department of Neurosurgery is proud to welcome that Neuro-oncologist Aaron G. Mammoser, M.D. has been named the Kelsey Bradley Favrot Chair in Neuro-Oncology. Dr. Mammoser was most recently a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan with subspecialty training in Neuro-Oncology. He received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1994, his master’s degree from Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 2000, and his medical degree from the University at Buffalo in 2005. He completed his Neurology residency at the University of Michigan, and completed his fellowship training in Neuro-Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
“With the hiring of Dr. Mammoser, brain cancer patients in our region can finally seek treatment from a neuro-oncologist right here at home,” said Frank Culicchia, M.D., chair, LSU Department of Neurosurgery. “The New Orleans area has long needed a neuro-oncologist and Dr. Mammoser’s arrival satisfies a key component of Kelsey’s vision.”
On January 8th, 2008, Kelsey Favrot was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor known as Gliomatosis Cerebri. During the next 20 months, Kelsey underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy with courage, hope and grace. Unfortunately, she had to receive treatment out of town because none of the hospitals in New Orleans had a physician whose primary focus was neuro-oncology. The distance was a hardship for Kelsey, her family and friends, who would have preferred she remain in New Orleans for care so they could be at her side. With characteristic determination, Kelsey began to explore ways to assist those who would face a brain cancer diagnosis in the future. Kelsey succumbed to brain cancer in August 2009.
