Several local and national organizations have put a call out to request donations and volunteers in the wake of Louisiana’s historic flooding, which has so far killed six, according to the Weather Channel, and forced rescues of 20,000 more. Here are local and national places to give monetary donations and goods.
Church Alley Coffee & The Good Shop, located at 1618 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., is collecting toiletries, shoes, socks, cleaning supplies, baby wipes, formulas, car seats, fans, contractor garbage bags, gloves, and utility knives.
Junior League of New Orleans will accept donations at their headquarters, located at 4319 Carondelet St., during normal business hours of 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. They request the following donations:
- Diapers in all sizes.
- Women’s feminine hygiene products to be taken to shelters.
- Gift cards in $20 amounts to Target and WalMart.
JLNO will continue to accept donations until further notice and are expected to make first deliveries to Baton Rouge and Lafayette on August 18 and 19. They are also taking monetary donations online at jlno.org/louisiana-flood-relief.
Rouses Markets is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank, and all stores are accepting cash and donations of non-perishable food, cleaning supplies and toiletries.
For those who can’t make it to a cash register at the store, donations are also being accepted online.
Dirty Coast is accepting donations of all kinds at both of their locations, 5631 Magazine St. and 2121 Chartres St.
There are several organizations outside of Uptown seeking help, too. Other locations around the city include:
- Rouler Cycling, 601 Baronne St. (CBD)
- The Stacks Bookstore at Contemporary Arts Center, 900 Camp St. (CBD)
- Buff Beauty Bar, 720 Carondelet St. (CBD), is accepting donations of new, unused toiletries; will also donate one personal care product for each one purchased this week.
- Mid-City locations
- Gentilly locations
Sheriff Marlin Gusman also announced that his staff will be collecting clothes and other donations at the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, located in Mid-City.
