Join the New Orleans Jewish Community Center and pay homage to those lost during the Holocaust for the community-wide memorial program, Yom Hashoah. Philip Bailowits, one of seven Holocaust survivors living in New Orleans, will be a keynote speaker for the event Sunday (April 27).

Philip Bialowitz, one of seven living survivors of Sobibór, will be the keynote speaker for the Yom Hashoah community-wide Holocaust Memorial Program held Sunday, April 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the New Orleans Jewish Community Center – Uptown. This event is free and open to the public.
The memorial program remembers and honors local survivors while educating the public about the horrors of the Nazi regime and teaching the importance of tolerance. Holocaust Survivors play an integral role in planning the program. The evening is free and open to the public.
Bialowitz bears witness to the horrors of Sobibór, a Nazi extermination camp where 250,000 people perished between 1942 and 1943.
During the program, cellist Daniel Lelchuk, Assistant Principle cello for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Orleans Opera Association, will perform “Prayer” from Jewish Life, by Ernest Bloch. He will be accompanied by pianist Diana Aidos.
Additionally, the 9th Annual Educator of the Year award will be presented to Tony Behan, a Religion and Theology teacher at De La Salle high School in New Orleans, Louisiana. This award recognizes local teachers who do an outstanding job integrating Holocaust education into their curriculum. High school delegates selected for the Anti-Defamation League Donald R. Mintz Youth Leadership Mission to Washington D.C. also will be recognized.
A dessert reception and book signing will follow the memorial program. Commemorative photographs and memorabilia from the war will be on display in the JCC lobby.
