In hopes of using sunshine as a disinfectant, the residents of Coliseum Square are compiling a list of the 12 most-offensive blighted properties in their neighborhood.

Meanwhile, they are also continuing their efforts to improve the parks in the neighborhood, cleaning out the Coliseum Square fountain and preparing a finger park on Terpsichore for an iconic new statue, they said Monday evening during the association’s June meeting.

The association was scheduled to discuss a proposal by Second Line Stages to buy and close a section of Chippewa, but the company’s owners asked before the meeting for more time to look into the issue, said association president Frank Cole. Discussion of a new home planned for the former site of the Coliseum Theatre at 1233 Coliseum Street was also postponed, leaving the majority of Monday’s meeting a review of some the association’s ongoing activities.

One effort, the blight list, was compiled from association member’s suggestions, and after paring the list to 12 worst offenders, the association’s blight committee is now photographing each to be placed in a graphic on the association website and sent to preservationists and the city. Publicity surrounding the list could help push the city to schedule some problem properties for sheriff’s auctions and attract new buyers for others, Cole said.

“Maybe someone with enough time and interest and finances could buy it and bring it into commerce,” Cole says.

Neighborhood residents are also looking forward to the installation of the new “Birth of a Muse” statue at the park on Terpsichore, which is currently expected to happen in late July, said association member Derek Brown. The association has been working on preparing a site for the state in the park, and Brown said another cleanup day is planned in the coming weeks.

The meeting also touched on the association’s budget for the next year, maintenance at the fountain at Coliseum Square, and a proposal for a temporary mobile kitchen on a vacant lot at Magazine and Race.
