The Office of Neighborhood Engagement is inviting residents to participate in one of the office’s most popular initiatives, the Civic Leadership Academy.

This is an eight-week program that provides residents with an in-depth look at city government. The program includes tours, hands-on demonstrations and presentations that give participants an insider’s view of how the city operates. With this knowledge, participants will be better equipped to lead collective action toward the advancement of neighborhoods and residents’ quality of life.

The program is free. It provides opportunities for residents to interact with city staff and elected officials while educating themselves about local government. CLA is composed of eight interactive sessions, led by representatives from city departments.

Individuals who live in New Orleans, are at least 18 years old, and who are actively involved in a neighborhood or business association can participate.

CLA will meet weekly on Wednesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. from March 27 through May 1 at City Hall, Homeland Security Conference Room (8E10) located at 1300 Perdido St.

The preliminary course schedule is:
Week 1: The Organization and Vision of City Government
Week 2: Dollars and Sense: Financing NOLA’s Needs
Week 3: The Mechanics of City Government
Week 4: Planning for Tomorrow
Week 5: Developing and Revitalizing Our Communities
Week 6: Public Safety
Week 7: Get Moving and Stay Connected
Week 8: Graduation and Looking Ahead

Up to 35 applicants will be selected for the Academy. Special consideration will be given to applicants who actively participate in city initiatives and who are already leading community revitalization efforts in their neighborhood.

Apply online or visit the Mayor’s Neighborhood Engagement Office in City Hall in 8E15. Applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, March 11, or until the course reaches capacity. To apply for Civic Leadership Academy, please click here.
