An armed robber frustrated that his victim had little to steal threw her to the ground in an unusually violent robbery attempt in the Garden District this past weekend, police said Thursday.
The woman was walking to her parked car near the intersection of Josephine and Prytania streets around 5:30 p.m. Friday when the robber approached her from behind, grabbed her pony tail, and demanded her belongings while brandishing a chrome semi-automatic handgun, said Sgt. Sandra Contreras of the NOPD Sixth District persons-crimes division. When he saw that all she had was a dollar and a pack of cigarettes, he threw her to the ground and left, in what Contreras said was an unusual display of force by a robber.
“Usually they don’t put their hands on them,” Contreras said. “But this one did, so we’re concerned.”
The description of the gun suggested that the robber might be linked to some previous reports, but the victim described his appearance differently from in the other cases, Contreras said.
The attacker is described as a 6-foot black man in his late 20s with an athletic build and medium complexion, wearing an oversized yellow hooded Saints sweatshirt and oversized dark pants.
