Signs mocking Obama on Calhoun draw protests

The signs — which depict President Obama as a crying baby demanding “change,” a dunce and a puppet — drew protesters across Calhoun Street, as well as a visit from former Mayor Ray Nagin, according to our reporting partners at WWL-TV. Homeowner Timothy Reily declined to speak about the signs, but Councilwoman Susan Guidry said she was investigating whether they constituted a violation of city zoning ordinances.

  1. Meh. Free speech is on Reily’s side, good taste and common sense are not. (Glad I’m not his neighbor!) I think he’s getting exactly the response and publicity he was hoping for, but here’s the big question: Is he going to “swing” any votes with this stunt? I seriously doubt it. So, in the final analysis, he’s just preaching to his choir and riling-up the opposition. 13 months to go and it’s already so predictably tedious. Yawn.

  2. This sign is more of an advertisement of its owner’s childishness than anything else. He should be ashamed, but then children often don’t understand what class means.

  3. Zoning has no role in free speech? Well, then, let’s all of us — every one of us — place giant obnoxious political signs in our yards facing the street and see what that does to the visual appeal of the streetscape, and long-term, to the value of properties.

  4. I agree that the gaudiness of the sign is more annoying than the message. People have made fun of politicians for years, and they will for years to come. Remember all the crazy antics with former mayor Nagin?

  5. Although I generally agree w his msg, the signs are disrespectful to the presidency. But the fact that those loser protestors are there yelling “cracker & peckerwood” makes me laugh & now I kind of like the signs just to piss them off. The signs don’t look too good on the streets cape but neither does any political yard sign. I lean towards the free speech. And why is Guidry so concerned?? Concentrate on the mid city & Carrollton crime wave or blight Ms Guidry.

  6. Only those with no intellectual argument resort to name calling & the race card. They are plentiful in the hidden world of the internet. Congrats 1945Gypsy on bringing nothing to this thread.
