In addition to the deadly shooting Tuesday on South Roman Street, officers and detectives in the New Orleans Police Department’s sixth district have been kept busy over the last week with a series of robberies and burglaries in the Magazine Street area of the Garden District and a violent feud in Central City.

The sixth district has experienced a few weeks of relative calm, but now “things are starting to spiral up” in comparison, noted Capt. Robert Bardy. The Garden District saw two robberies last week, officers reported. In the first, the victims were in the 1200 block of St. Mary Street leaving the Half Moon when they were approached by men with T-shirts over their faces, one of whom was armed with a silver handgun. One of the victims dropped her purse and fled, but the robbers held the other victim at gunpoint and went through his pockets before telling him to run also.

In the second robbery, a woman was getting something out of the back seat of her car in the 1400 block of Toledano when she was approached by a robber who demanded her purse and iPhone before telling her to drive away without looking at him. She noticed that he had an accomplice acting as lookout, police said.

The two robberies may be related, officers noted, because of their relative proximity and the description and behavior of the suspects.

Sixth district detectives are also investigating a string of residential burglaries they believe to be related at locations on Jackson Avenue, Harmony Street and Magazine Street. In another case, police have obtained video footage of a woman stealing a purse at a Magazine Street bar that they expect to be releasing soon.

In Central City, police saw a number of related shootings related to an ongoing feud. Last week, one man was shot in the foot on First Street, and another was fired upon on Second Street. Officers believe that a group in this area is feuding with another group from Josephine Street, they said. A third related shooting took place this week on Second Street, they said.

Gunshots were also fired last week by a group of men on Phillips Street, near the same area, officers reported.
