A former television newscaster won a runoff election Saturday to represent much of downtown New Orleans in the state House of Representatives, besting a former mayoral candidate in an election that saw less than 10 percent voter turnout.

Helena Moreno received 1,274 votes (56 percent) to James Perry’s 1,011 (44 percent), according to complete but uncertified results from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office.

District 93, which covers much of the Central Business District and the French Quarter and parts of the Garden District and Mid City, has more than 25,000 qualified voters, but only 8.8 percent turned out for Saturday’s runoff.

Moreno succeeds state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, who resigned to run for Louisiana Senate District 5.
