Full reconstruction is planned for the stretch of Magazine that goes through Audubon Park.

From the Mayor’s Office

New Orleans Department of Public Works and Louisiana Department of Transportation contractor Hard Rock Construction will begin construction on Magazine Street in and near Audubon Park next week.

On Jan. 4, 2022, crews will begin lane closures on Magazine Street from Leake Avenue to West Drive to begin sewer and water line work on the first phase of the project, on the river side of Magazine.

During this phase of work, eastbound traffic will be detoured to St. Charles Avenue via Broadway Street. Residents and commuters are reminded to use caution when driving, bicycling and walking near the construction site. Lane closure and detour signs will be in place throughout construction; the river side closure phase is scheduled to reopen Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.

The $5.5 million Magazine Street (Leake Avenue to East Drive) project is a full-depth reconstruction that calls for removing and replacing existing water and drainage lines, repairing the sewer line, repaving the roadway in concrete, replacing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons and installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections. All work on this project is anticipated to be completed by winter 2023.

Street parking and driveway access will be impacted. Residents and visitors must adhere to any “No Parking” signs on the streets to avoid being ticketed and towed. Residents and commuters will be notified of any changes to New Orleans Regional Transportation schedules during construction.

The City of New Orleans hosted a community meeting in July 2021 to discuss anticipated impacts to the community. View a copy of the presentation here. In addition RoadworkNOLA will continue to work with community leaders and stakeholders throughout the duration of the project. Residents, businesses, schools and medical facilities will be notified ahead of all work that will impact access and/or require temporary utility disruptions.

Since May 2018, DPW has completed 99 projects with an estimated value of $282 million. Today, more than 70 roadwork projects are under construction, estimated at nearly $700 million.
