Firefighters battle three-alarm blaze in Central City apartment building

Flames engulfed an apartment building on Washington and Carondelet streets on Monday night. Firefighters were called to the three-alarm fire about 8:30 p.m. It was under control at about 11 p.m.

All 26 residents in the two-story building were safely evacuated, the Fire Department reported. A dog belonging to one of the residents died in the fire, however. About 300 people in the area were without power Monday night because of the blaze.

Early morning fire rages through strip mall on Washington Avenue in Broadmoor

A three-alarm fire broke out early Wednesday in a strip mall on Washington Avenue in Broadmoor. It caused extensive damage to the building that housed eight stores, fire officials report. The alarm sounded at about 2:45 a.m., and firefighters had the blaze under control by about 5 a.m. No injuries were reported. 

Only a convenience store in the 4100 block of Washington Avenue, near Eden and Dupre streets, was operating under the pandemic restrictions, and it was closed at the time of the fire, WWL-TV reported. In addition to the convenience store, the affected businesses include Dem Fire Sno Balls, J&B Cleaners, Tattoos, Nola Nails, Rusty’s Po-Boys and Seafood, Emerald Services (a tax preparation and financial planning business), and Karmah Tattoo Supply and Gallery, according to a Google search.

Firefighters battle four-alarm blaze on St. Charles Avenue

The New Orleans Police Department responded to a four-alarm fire Friday morning in a residence on St. Charles Avenue near First Street. The fire was reported as a three-alarm at 10:45 a.m. Firefighters found a building “heavily involved in fire on the third floor,” said New Orleans Fire Department Superintendent Timothy McConnell. Four NOPD officers fired after unauthorized pursuit led to fiery fatal crash into Broadmoor salon

Four New Orleans Police officers were fired Wednesday in connection with a March car chase that ended with the suspect’s vehicle crashing into a Broadmoor salon and starting a fire that killed three people, after an internal investigation revealed “multiple policy violations” and a pattern of unauthorized pursuits, authorities said. The fired officers are Alex Mikkelsen, Jonathan Broom, Jeffrey Herrington and Alex Florian. All have been with the department for two years except Florian, who had been on the force three years. Also suspended in the investigation were two more officers, 9-year veteran Colby Stewart and William Hery, who had also been with the department two years. Steward was suspended 44 days and Hery for 54 days.

Unity-1 Salon gets $10,000 donation to help rebuild

The Bronner Brothers International Beauty Show came to New Orleans last weekend, and it didn’t leave without supporting a local shop after tragedy. According to reports, the show director James Bronner and CEO of Kalaidescope Hair, Jesseca Dupart, raised $10,000 for Unity-1 Beauty Supply and Hair Salon. The Broadmoor shop was the site of a car crash and three-alarm fire on March 20 which caused several fatalities, injuries and extensive property damage. Unity-1 has asked for support and have been raising funds to help them rebuild. According to WDSU, Bronner and Dupart both raised $5,000 each for John and Dr. Beverly Smith, the owners of Unity-1. “The Bronner Brothers are a perfect example of what it looks like when community and philanthropy come together,” said the Broadmoor Improvement Association in a newsletter.

Firefighters battle a five-alarm fire in Central City

New Orleans firefighters are battling a five-alarm blaze at Baronne and Felicity streets that started early Monday. Four people were rescued after the fire quickly spread from a vacant camelback to nearby apartment building, WWL-TV reported. The fire started before 5:20 a.m. in the 1800 block of Baronne Street in Central City, according to the New Orleans Fire Department. Firefighters arriving at the scene rescued three people from a balcony and a fourth person from a nearby burning building. The New Orleans Fire Department posted photos on social media battling flames from a second-story window in the darkness and continuing to fight the large fire after the sun came up.

Fatal car crash sets off blaze in Broadmoor beauty salon; woman dies from burn injuries

A speeding driver crashed into a beauty salon Wednesday night, setting the car and the building on fire. Both people inside the car died at the scene, the New Orleans Police Department reported, and two children and multiple adults were injured in the blaze. One of the fire victims, a woman who was getting her hair done in the salon, died at the hospital of her injuries, the NOPD reported early Friday. The crash set off a three-alarm fire in the building at 4125 Washington Ave., Fire Superintendent Tim McConnell said. The building houses the Unity-1 Beauty Supply and Hair Salon.

Smoke from the seven-alarm fire in the Garden District on Wednesday damaged air quality throughout the city, the city’s emergency preparedness office reports. Anyone who is elderly or has respiratory disease, such as asthma, is advised to stay inside, keep their doors and windows closed, set their air-conditioning systems to re-circulate the air inside the building and avoid using exhaust fans if possible. Anyone who is having difficulty breathing should seek medical attention. The heavy smoke may impact the air in the Central Business District, French Quarter, Treme, Mid-City, Fairgrounds, 7th Ward, St.

Fire endangers historic St. Charles Avenue mansion in the Garden District

New Orleans Fire Department firefighters battled a seven-alarm blaze that threatens a notable historic building in the 2500 block of St. Charles Avenue on Wednesday morning. The 150-year-old mansion, the home to several kings and queens of Carnival, was in danger of collapse Wednesday morning, NOFD Superintendent Timothy McConnell said. The fire was brought under control 1:45, but the mansion’s three residents lost their home. No injuries were reported.
