Police arrested a man on the Claiborne Avenue end of the parade route Tuesday for illegal possession of a gun, and at least six other weapons cases were reported that afternoon along St. Charles Avenue.

Shortly after 1 p.m., concerned citizens alerted an Orleans Parish Sheriff’s deputy to a man who had a gun, according to an NOPD news release. The officer saw the “distinct shape of a handgun” in the man’s waistband, stopped him and seized a 9-mm from him, which the officer then turned over to an NOPD Second District officer assisting with the arrest, police said.

Kendal Edwards, 23, was charged with illegal possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to jail records.

At least five other illegal-carrying cases were reported along the route Tuesday, four within a roughly one-block area in the Garden District, according to NOPD crime maps. Two were reported near St. Charles and Eighth, one at 3 p.m. and one at 5 p.m. Another two cases were reported a block away near St. Charles and Seventh, at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Finally, a weapons case was also reported just before 2 p.m. near St. Charles and Erato, near the same location where a double-shooting took place during Thursday’s parades. More details on those cases will be published as soon as they are available.

  1. You’re showing a portion of th crime map but why are we not seeing anything about the homicide?

    Case Number: B3171912
    Date: 2/21/2012 5:22 PM
Location: 1600 BLOCK OF LOUISIANA AVE
    Description: HOMICIDE

    • My understanding — I haven’t confirmed this yet completely — is that this was a hit-and-run case where an officer was struck. The injuries, as I understand, were not life-threatening.

I think — and again, I’m still trying to confirm all these details — that it’s classified as an attempted homicide because an officer is involved, and the crime maps don’t usually note when an incident is an attempt.

In other words, I think the map is pretty misleading in this instance. The map that I printed was specifically requested to show weapons cases on Fat Tuesday, so the case you mention doesn’t show — which was intentional, since the explanation suggests that the symbol is misleading here.

I was able to get a simple confirmation that the gun cases on the map took place before I published this article. I’ve since received all the details in these gun cases, so I’ll be writing a more detailed article on that soon.

Thanks for the question, and thanks for reading UptownMessenger.com.

  2. I was at the corner of St Charles & Clio for Mardi Gras day and we heard what sounded like shots coming from the direction of the Erato street area. The entire crowd around us ducked and covered in a panic. Then about 30 minutes or so later, the police (probably 4-5 of them) took down a man literally right behind us which again caused everyone around to panic so people began to duck & cover. Since I couldn’t really find anything in the news about this today, I was beginning to wonder if we were all just imagining things or paranoid. Did you get details on any of this? If so, I am interested to know exactly what happened around me on Mardi Gras.

    • I do see an illegal-carrying report on the crime maps from Thalia and St. Charles at 1:47 p.m. Tuesday, but I don’t have those details yet. Maybe this afternoon, when the Sixth District meets, I can find out more.

    • I was at this location when the gun shot went off and everyone including (I believe Warren Eastern’s band) ran for cover! I spoke to an Orleans Sheriff shortly there after and he told us a male had been shot and a female and male were on the run towards the city. His words to us where “Stay Vigilant and be aware of your surroundings.” No long after the second incident happened were again everyone was running for cover. Supposedly this was a fight and someone was arrested. But it was not worth being shot over! Like MANY others in this area packed up and left. Mardi Gras ended for us 10 floats into Rex.
