"Birth of a Muse," by Kim Bernadas
On Friday evening, the Lower Garden District wants you to come play in its parks.
At 5:30 p.m., the Arts Council of New Orleans will celebrate the installation of a new sculpture, Kim Bernadas’ “Birth of a Muse,” in the Terpsichore finger park near Prytania. After Hurricane Katrina, the Percent for Art program focused on restoration of public art, and “Birth of a Muse” is the first new work commissioned since then. The ceremony and reception will feature “live dancers and musicians, refreshments and hor d’oeuvres,” according to the Arts Council:
When the piece is installed on Terpsichore St. it will create another entrance point to the park guarded by a strong female figure; like Margaret Haughery at the Clio St. entrance, and Sophie Wright at the uptown end of the park system.
The new sculpture is a cast bronze figure representing one of the nine muses (Terpsichore), who are the namesakes of the Lower Garden District neighborhood. According to the artist, “The Muses, according to Greek mythology, are goddesses who inspire the creation of the arts. They whisper in the ear, light the fire within, and stimulate the creative process of every artist. Expressed here is Terpsichore, emerging from a trumpet flower, to begin her life in celebration of music, song and dance. She beckons friends old and new to explore Coliseum Square and celebrate the natural and artistic beauty found in the neighborhood of the nine muses.”
After the sculpture installation, the New Orleans Film Society will present the comedy classic “Airplane!” in Coliseum Square, the second outdoor movie night it has hosted in the park.
“Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy this fun flick,” the Film Society says on its website. “Come early to reserve your spot! There will be food and drink vendors on site, so please refrain from bringing snacks and outside beverages.”

Airplane is funny and all but does any one else find it kind of an odd choice for this event?
The “why” as to the choice of ‘Airplane!’ is definitely absent and at the very least random.
