City Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell will hold a public hearing Wednesday morning (Jan. 7) to discuss the new laws banning indoor smoking in New Orleans and other measures, she announced.

Cantrell has been promoting a ban on smoking since the summer, when her office hosted a town-hall style discussion on the issue at Carrollton Station, which was already smoke free. She introduced the details of the ordinance in November to split opinion, and Councilwoman Nadine Ramsey has sought to amend it to allow some exemptions.

The meeting of the Community Development Committee will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the City Council chamber at City Hall, 1300 Perdido Street. It is open to the public and will include a public-comment section.

As chair of the City Council’s Community Development Committee, Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell will hold a committee meeting in the City Council Chambers to discuss and receive public comment on the proposed smoke-free ordinance.

The community meeting takes place 10 am Wednesday, January 7, 2015 in City Council Chambers, 1300 Perdido St., New Orleans, LA 70112.

“The smoke-free ordinance would go a long way in terms of protecting our workers and improving public health,” Councilmember Cantrell says. “It’s imperative that we present the best possible legislation, and that means hearing the public and having them weigh in on the proposal.”

The smoke-free ordinance, which is co-authored by Councilmembers Cantrell and Guidry, was given a first reading at the November 20 City Council meeting.
