Loyola University to host presentation on new human sacrifice discoveries in Peru

Loyola University New Orleans University will be hosting a presentation this Wednesday, Feb. 17 that will use data collected during more than 25 years of excavation and analysis of sacrificial sites on the north coast of Peru. The lecture will be by Ph.D. John Verano of the Department of Anthropology at Tulane University, and admission and parking on campus is free to the public. The lecture will take place from 8 to 9 p.m. in Thomas Hall at Loyola New Orleans University, located on 6363 St. Charles Avenue.

The Orchid Society to honor African-American women at five-year anniversary dinner

The Orchid Society will celebrate their five-year anniversary as a community partner of African-American women serving as positive role models for young ladies through mentoring, community service, and social awareness programming. The five-year anniversary celebration is this Saturday, Jan. 9 and will feature a dinner at Felicity Church with live music by singer Elliot Luv. The event will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. at Felicity Church, located on 1818 Chestnut Street. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased here.

Mount Zion Lutheran Church to host birth of Jesus Christ presentation

 

The Mount Zion Lutheran Church is hosting a living nativity scene of Jesus Christ this Saturday, December 19. The event will feature caroling and is free and open to the public. Calvin Johnson to host third annual Christmas concert at Trinity Episcopal Church

 

Trinity Episcopal Church will host the third annual Christmas concert for local sax player and bandleader Calvin Johnson, this Sunday, December 20. The Christmas concert titled “Calvin Johnson with Strings Winter Wonder Jam: a Benefit for New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity” is free and will feature special guests Glen David Andrews and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The concert takes place at the Trinity Episcopal Church, located on 1329 Jackson Avenue. Doors open for 5 p.m., and the show begins at 5:30 p.m. With a 10-member ensemble, Johnson will perform classic Christmas songs with a New Orleans twist, and the concert will benefit nonprofit organization New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity. Representatives from New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) will be accepting donations during the program.

Carrollton Area Network to coordinate caroling at Palmer Park

Choir members of Mater Dolorosa and Central St. Matthew United Church of Christ will lead the Carrollton Area Network’s annual holiday caroling at Palmer Park this Sunday, Dec. 20, with free eggnog, hot chocolate, popcorn and other snacks in an effort to support Second Harvest Food Bank. Caroling will begin at 6 p.m. at Palmer Park at the intersection of South Claiborne and South Carrollton. Candles and books will be provided, and attendees are encouraged to make monetary or non-perishable food donations to the Second Harvest.

Keller Library to host “Sugar Plum Celebration” with free books, holiday activities

The Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center in Broadmoor will feature “Sugar Plum Celebration” this Saturday, Dec. 19, free children’s and teen’s books with holiday treats and activities. 

The celebration will take place from 12 to 2 p.m. at Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center at 4300 South Broad. The celebration will also include music, crafts, treats, and cookie decorating, as well as a visit from a special guest. Garden District Christmas Concert scheduled for newly-restored Our Lady of Good Counsel church

The Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel will host a concert this Sunday, December 13, to officially reopen the newly-restored church. The event is free and open to the public and will feature the 14th Archbishop of New Orleans, Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond. The Christmas concert will take place at 4 p.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, located on 1307 Louisana Avenue. The following New Orleans’ musicians will be featured:

St. Alphonsus Catholic Church to host Irish Christmas party

The St. Alphonsus Catholic Church will host an Irish Christmas party presented by the Irish Network New Orleans (IN-NOLA) this Saturday, December 12. The event is free for IN-NOLA members and children, and members  may bring guests for $10 per guest. The Irish Christmas party will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, located at 2030 Constance Street.
