A man armed with a gun tried to rob the cashier at a Magazine Street snowball stand on Wednesday evening, and then took the tip jar near the window instead, New Orleans police said.

The gunman approached the Sno Wizard at 4001 Magazine Street shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, and demanded money from the register, according to the initial NOPD report. “The employee rushed to the back of the business,” the report states, “and the subject reached inside the window and took a money jar then fled.”

The suspect “was described as a white male, 40 to 50 years of age, with a white-and-grey full beard and grey-and-white long hair,” the report states. “He was wearing a gray T-shirt, green shorts, black hat, and brown slippers with white socks. It appeared that the suspect has a small tattoo on his right outer leg.”

Another armed robbery was also reported around two hours later. A man in his early 20s was walking near Washington and Loyola avenues shortly before 8:30 p.m. when someone grabbed him from behind, put a gun to his back, demanded his backpack and then left with it, according to the initial NOPD report in that case.

Further details were not immediately available in either case. Anyone with information is urged to call the NOPD Sixth District station at 658-6060 to speak to a detective, or CrimeStoppers at 822-1111 to leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward.
