Two men were killed in a shooting on St. Charles Avenue while the Krewe of Muses rolled Thursday evening, and a suspect has been taken into custody on an attempted-murder charge, New Orleans police said.

The shooting took place around 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, in the 1300 block of St. Charles Avenue, according to a NOPD news release. Both victims were taken to the hospital, but the 21-year-old victim died during surgery for a gunshot to the chest, the release states. The other victim, who was 22, was shot in the neck and initially listed in critical condition afterward, but he died at the hospital Friday morning, the release states.

The 21-year-old man was identified by the Orleans Parish Coroner’s office as Peter Dabney. The second man’s name has not been released, but police said both men are local.

John Hicks, 19, was seen running from the shooting scene, and when police apprehended him, they also found a weapon nearby, the release states. He was arrested after questioning, police said, and he was charged with second-degree murder, attempted second degree murder and the illegal carrying of a firearm on a parade route, jail records show.

A shooting in nearly the same location injured two people on Muses Thursday in 2012.
