Intended to greatly enrich our students’ understanding of and appreciation for the visual arts, the Donna Perret Rosen Artist-in-Residence Program brings a recognized artist to Isidore Newman School to teach, lecture, and exhibit his or her original work. The artist conducts workshops and one-on-one sessions with students, offering them perhaps their first chance to get to know someone who makes living as an artist. Ben Rosen ’50 established the fellowship in honor of his wife Donna. Prior to her move to New York City, Donna played a large role in shaping the New Orleans art scene as a patron of the arts and the director of the Galerie Simonne Stern.
Born in New Orleans, Ron Bechet holds a B.A. degree in Fine Arts from the University of New Orleans, and an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the Yale School of Art, Yale University. He is a painter that has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. He is the Victor H. Labat Professor of Art at Xavier University of Louisiana. Mr. Bechet had served as chair of the art department at Xavier University for nine years and five years at Southern University at New Orleans. He has been teaching for twenty years at the college level. He has served as the first director of Xavier Art Department’s Community Arts Partnership Program and served in many arts and youth programs in the New Orleans area, both as an advisor and a practitioner. Bechet lives in New Orleans, where he finds the source for his work and way of living.
