“Scare the hell out of ‘em,” my grandfather used to routinely yell at the TV during the weather under a hurricane watch. Louis was a funny, old guy. Spot on, too. Laying back in his ratty, leather Lazy Boy, he’d peer at the precipitation prognosticators through his thick glasses and maybe shake his right index figure counterbalanced by a crooked pinky a la an old football injury incurred when shoes were still and truly spiked. This phrase accompanied every foreboding forecast while my grandmother Mireille would counter his groans with a dismissive “Oh Louis . . .” Continue reading »

New Orleans police walk crime-scene tape around the site of a shooting in the parking lot of a McDonald’s on South Carrollton Avenue. (Robert Morris, UptownMessenger.com)
In the thick heat just before the sun began to set Tuesday afternoon, a middle-aged man stood on the Carrollton Avenue sidewalk with his wife and 8-year-old son and watched as crime scene technicians counted shell casings in the parking lot of McDonald’s.
“Sometimes I hate that I ever came back to New Orleans,” said 44-year-old Kenny Smith, a Gert Town resident who lives about three blocks from the latest shooting in his neighborhood. “You can’t even come to McDonald’s to get something to eat without worrying about getting shot at.” Continue reading »

In “The One: The Life and Music of James Brown,” biographer “[R.J.] Smith carefully and smartly reveals Brown’s flaws without reveling in the Backstage Confidential stories. He also balances Brown’s flaws with his assessment of his musical accomplishments,” writes former Offbeat editor Alex Rawls in the introduction to an extensive interview with Smith on Rawls’ new music news site, MySpiltMilk.com. Smith reads and signs the book tonight at Octavia Books.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for July 24, but if any issues require board attention before then, a special meeting will be called, Smith writes.

The former WOW Wingery at State and Magazine is receiving extensive renovations so that Reginelli’s can move across the street.
The back end of the former WOW Wingery restaurant at State and Magazine has been removed and its interior completely gutted, but when Reginelli’s moves across the street this fall, the building’s exterior will be restored to its original appearance of a traditional New Orleans corner grocery, the owner said Monday morning.
“We’re trying to bring it back to the traditional old-style corner grocery,” said Darryl Reginelli. “It’s really going to go back to what it was originally.” Continue reading »

Ah, summer in New Orleans. As the mercury erupts like Old Faithful and shirts stick to backs like fly paper, a gentleman’s fancy turns to avoiding dehydration and heat stroke by staying indoors. There’s nothing like that wave of cold, mechanically-produced air to take the edge off looking like you just took a shower with your clothes on.
Alas, there is one thing that tears me from the comforting womb of mother air conditioning at regular intervals throughout the summer. I am speaking, of course, of that public menace known as YARD WORK. Continue reading »
