It’s official: the Wall Street Journal has picked Dat Dog as one of the nation’s top spots for hot dogs. “Dat Dog is such a hit,” the Journal writes, “that it’s already moving to a larger space across the street. The German wieners and sausages are cradled in open-faced, grill-marked rolls, and are a feat to finish.”

They’re right on the money — Dat Dog is already planning its expansion to a more spacious, comfortable doghouse, among other exciting changes coming this fall. Keep reading for more details about what’s going on with the neighborhoood’s top dog!

Preservation Resource Center will be hosting a Sheriff Sale Educational Workshop on July 26th.

The City of New Orleans is pushing an increasing number of properties to auction after foreclosing on liens, much as a bank would foreclose upon a mortgage. Complaining about not having anything to do in New Orleans on the weekend is like being that bratty, spoiled child grandma overindulged with toys and just wants more. I suppose it’s all relative, though, when you are nestled in a city known for its nightlife.  While the list of bars and nightclubs is immeasurable, it is sometimes hard to find something that isn’t either a smokey dive bar to catch a live band or a raucous nightclub where the music is bumping. Not that there’s anything wrong with that (to borrow a line from Seinfeld), but lately I’ve really been in the mood for a laugh, and New Orleans’ growing comedy scene is exactly what this city needs. The St. James Major campus in Gentilly, currently occupied by Hynes Charter School. (Robert Morris, UptownMessenger.com)

Many Audubon Charter School parents and teachers see the St. James Major campus in Gentilly as an attractive option for a temporary campus after Hynes Charter School moves out of it during the winter break, they told school officials after hearing about four new options at a Thursday afternoon meeting.

Before the school can begin a two-year renovation of its Broadway campus, it must find an interim location for the students who are already there, and the urgency of the search has increased since a site in the Lower Garden District was deemed unacceptable earlier this summer. The Orleans Parish School Board has asked Audubon to have an answer by Aug. 1, little more than a week away. Continue reading »

With record breaking high temperatures this summer air conditioning energy bills can also be reaching new record highs.  Contrary to popular belief, cooling issues in a home are rarely caused by lack of A/C output — instead, they’re usually due to insufficient insulation in the attic. To help you control your energy bills and stay cool this summer, GreenBean Insulation is offering a $150 coupon to readers of the Uptown Messenger off the cost of any insulation work this summer.

The area of Annunciation Street around General Taylor and Peniston is becoming a hotspot for gun and drug activity, concerned neighbors said. This NOPD map shows the two gun cases in the area from June.

A large crowd of men who congregate on Annunciation Street playing dice and flashing guns at one another represent a growing problem that should be stopped before it becomes a tragedy, neighbors told Uptown-based Second District police Wednesday at their monthly community meeting.
