I live and work in the Freret corridor, and for many moons now promises of a new streetscape have been on the horizon.  Most recently, the collective residents and business owners were informed by the city just weeks ago the start date would be some time in early November.  Look at your calendar.  It’s the middle of December, and not a bit of concrete has been disturbed. A human-sized halo of bells. A fifteen-foot tall stairstep organ, whose pipes blow under the feet of men and women walking up and down. A bass-line driven by a stethoscope, held to the human heart. A house whose boards and windows and rafters serve as pure percussion, played by a musician whose sole purpose is to tap out a beat on every surface that it offers. A weathervane whose funnels play chords in major keys. Such are a few of the delights of the Dithyrambalina, otherwise known as the Music Box House, on Piety Street in the Bywater.

The closing night’s performance lasted just under an hour: too short. Too short by far.

Lusher Charter School is at the forefront of the effort to develop new educational standards that will be implemented in public schools across the country over the next three years, officials said.

Police have arrested a man suspected of abducting a McMain High School student at gunpoint from Nashville Avenue and raping her in his car, authorities announced Friday evening.

Jonathan Edward Wilson, 27, has been charged with two counts of rape, kidnapping and armed robbery, according to an NOPD news release. He was picked up Friday evening on Tchoupitoulas and Fourth streets based on a CrimeStoppers tip, police said. Continue reading »
