A man was shot shortly after 5 p.m. near South Claiborne and South Carrollton, one of the busiest intersections in Uptown New Orleans, leaving a sprawling crime scene that stretched from beside Palmer Park to the side yard of the Walgreens across the street.
Maryflynn Thomas was sleeping when an early-morning fire broke out Dec. 17 and consumed her three-story home on Peniston Street, but her dog Buttercup managed to wake her in the thick smoke so they could escape, Thomas told reporter Tania Dall of our partners at WWL-TV.
Drive in New Orleans much? Despite being such a walkable city, invariably and at some point one will get behind the wheel, and when that happens, it can be downright epic. From street condition to poor signage to watching vehicles seemingly competitively expel trash (airborne spent push-up ice cream tubes, errant and recently chewed chicken bones, I can go on), the experience transcends far beyond any driver’s ed course. But my question specifically therein and today is: Do you dosey doe?

A 21-year-old man was killed and a 31-year-old man was shot in the hand Tuesday afternoon in a shooting at the intersection of Tchoupitoulas Street and Jackson Avenue, police said.
Neighbors concerned about the future of two large Uptown properties near Audubon Park — an apartment complex on Tchoupitoulas and a mental health facility on Calhoun — received hopeful signs Tuesday night that the city is inclined to prevent major changes to either of them.
Police have released a sketch of the man who allegedly raped two women in the university area early Monday morning, and are seeking the public’s help identifying him.
The two women were walking near Palmer and South Robertson streets about 3 a.m. Monday when they were approached by a man “implying he had a weapon,” according to a NOPD news release. The man grabbed one of the women and threatened to harm her if the other did not do as he said, then forced both of them into an alley in the 6000 block of South Robertson where he sexually assaulted them, police said.
The suspect is described as a black man in his late teens or early 20s, roughly 5-foot-5 and 175 pounds, with an athletic build, dark complexion, a buzz haircut and a goatee, wearing a white T-shirt and denim jeans.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Vernon Haynes of the NOPD Special Victims Unit at 504-658-5523, or, to leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward, call CrimeStoppers at 822-1111.

One of my favorite books is “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom. The main character, Eddie, shares his post-death experience with the first five people he meets in Heaven. Several of those people Eddie had passed in life, unaware how his presence affected their lives on Earth.
