Two armed robberies were reported in the university area of the NOPD Second District this week, and one robbery was attempted on Eve Street. (via NOPD.com)

One juvenile robbery suspect was arrested by tracking his ankle bracelet and the stolen cell phone, and another robbery by teenagers was foiled when the victim drew his own gun, as the new commander of the NOPD Second District pledged this week to make stemming the tide of holdups the top priority for the entire district.

“Take a look at the armed robberies. That’s ridiculous,” said Commander Paul Noel on Thursday morning, after his first weekly meeting with the Second District leadership since being promoted to lead the district Sunday. “Every single person in this room has got to help work on that.” Continue reading »

Audubon Charter School to reinstate French prekindergarten for 3-year-olds.

Timely applications deadline for all grades extended through Feb. 15th.      

Audubon Charter School, an A+ school and the only Orleans public school accredited by the French National Government and an initiate member of the American Montessori Society, was recently approved to reinstate its French pre-K3 program (prekindergarten for 3 year olds) for the school year 2012-13.

Applications are available at the school website: www.auduboncharter.com or call (504) 324-7110 for information.

As a result, Audubon has extended its timely application deadline for all grades pre-K3 through 8 for both its French and Montessori programs to February 15, 2012 in order for applicants to have sufficient time to apply.

Despite decades of best efforts of local government, administration pledges, and the citizenry alike and at large, Freret couldn’t get any measurable play until after Katrina. But to be clear, no one thing has made Freret what it is today. It has taken a village, um, of events, so to speak. But let’s start with the birth of the Freret Street Boxing Gym, established seven years ago. At the time, Freret’s business offerings were basically tattoos, red beans and hardware. Today, as it has been for decades upon decades, the hardware store is still there. But not the tattoos. And not the red beans, either. And, as of the last month, the gym has moved as well — to O.C. Brian Williams, 32, was the man found fatally shot Thursday inside a home in the 2600 block of Dante Street, authorities told the Times-Picayune.

Major Bonner, 25, was the victim gunned down around 4 p.m. Saturday near Washington Avenue and South Broad Street, the newspaper reported. He was shot multiple times outside a red pickup, and drugs were found nearby, police said in a news release at the time. Continue reading »
