Post Commander Marshall Hevron

When Marshall Hevron first walked in the door at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8973 in Uptown in 2005, only five other members were regularly attending meetings, and they had all served in World War II, decades removed from Hevron’s service in Iraq.

“The VFW and American Legion took off after World War II and built up a big infrastructure they just can’t maintain now,” said Hevron, noting the smaller size of their corner store post was a blessing in disguise. Continue reading »

Kentrell “Black” Hickerson — said to belong to the 3-N-G street gang — had been charged as the triggerman in the June 2008 murder of Alvin Wilson, but an Orleans Parish jury acquitted him this week after the witness who originally identified Hickerson recanted his testimony, according to a report by John Simerman of the Times-Picayune.

I’ve been giving a lot of thought to this through the week and taking note of things at the shop, but I’m sure there are some things I’ve missed. Growing up here in the New Orleans area, you’d think I’m accustomed to mild winters. Fall down here is just a quaint notion, one that comes from a brain soaked with humidity in desperate need of some crisp cool air. I’m not one to obsess over the weather, but I get antsy in anticipation of consistently nippy days. Unfortunately, we all know drinking pumpkin spice lattes while wearing shorts is inevitable, but with a little careful planning you can make sure you are dressed for Mother Nature’s most erratic behavior by planning ahead on a daily basis.
