Political punditry has been turned into a hazardous occupation by the ups and downs of the Republican presidential primaries.
Just a month ago, it seemed pretty safe to speculate that Mitt Romney was on his way to locking up the Republican Presidential nomination and that Newt Gingrich was toast. Now, after the South Carolina primary, a victorious Gingrich is riding a wave of momentum while Romney is struggling to regain his credibility. Continue reading »

My last call for service before leaving my post with the NOPD Crisis Unit was a 24-year-old hanging from the rafters of his apartment, a clear and tragic sign that my advocacy work with the mentally ill was far from over. In my 10 years with the crisis unit, I was exposed to a large world of chronically mentally ill who live in our city, and their needs continue to be great, as witnessed in this last call. Things at Whole Foods are starting to get real.
Last week, on January 11th, a man met his wife for lunch at Whole Foods on Magazine Street. Apparently, he committed the grand, obscene offense of parking over the yellow line. As a result, when he returned he was confronted by a watchful Samaritan who proceeded to engage him in a calm, fruitful discussion on the subject of proper parking etiquette and its role in civil society. Empires rise and fall. Nations abide with the tides. Even glaciers and mountains shift their positions over time. In the grand scheme of things, there are certain forms of change about which we can do little, and which we must learn to accept. But then – sometimes – there are presences whose passage is worthy of our closest attention. After a brief break for the holidays, one of those has returned.
His name is Wheels.

Robberies reported in the Uptown area since Friday, Jan. 13. (via NOPD.com)
At least 20 teenagers have been arrested on robbery charges in the last two weeks, but the surge in Uptown robberies has continued unabated, police officials said Thursday.
One case alone yielded the arrest of a gang of nine teens who were allegedly involved in stealing a man’s laptop as he walked on Prytania Street. In another, a group of teens suspected in a series of Carrollton-area muggings were caught breaking into a house in the Milan area. Other cases involved cross-town car chases and block-by-block manhunts, almost always involving teens not much older than 16 or 17. Continue reading »

All-Star Marching Band, summer of 1997: We were out there sweltering in the heat on LSU’s practice field, memorizing music, remembering to mark time while staying in formation. We’d literally practice from when the sun came up to well after dusk, just like the All-Star Football Team. Except instead of running laps we were working on getting syncopated rhythms right. Our reward? Donning our school marching band uniforms in 90-degree humidity to keep the game watchers entertained, and earning a coveted patch for our letterman jackets. Continue reading »
