Being in real estate, I respond to inquiries about moving to New Orleans almost every day.  Some are here presently and somewhat homeless while some won’t be here till Fall.  The average inquiry looks like someone new to the area, and excitedly shopping for May or June, because of a new job in queue.  The hardest to manage are the parental inquiries seeking accommodations for their barely out of the house undergrad child and their three “closest” friends.  Sigh.  Really?  Sounds like a thankless journey, that one.  Do you know how hard it is to get a 19-year-old and – or even 24-year-old – and their friends du jour to show up to an appointment at the same time?  Much less get them to agree on anything.  Who gets the biggest room?  Who gets which bathroom and who will they share it with?  It’s messy and overly time-consuming at best. Business employee shoots at fleeing vehicle dragging worker trying to stop it, police say

[Correction appended]

A vehicle fleeing a restaurant parking lot and dragging an employee trying to stop it Monday afternoon was shot at by another man, authorities said.

The vehicle escaped, and it is unknown whether anyone inside it was wounded, police said. The employee was treated for injuries sustained in the dragging, and his condition was not immediately available. Continue reading »

City to consider making all bars 21-and-up

The New Orleans City Council is considering an ordinance that would raise the age to enter a bar to 21 across the city, instead of the minimum age of 18 that many bars currently allow, according to our reporting partners at WWL-TV. Reporter Monica Hernandez finds that some people running Uptown college bars oppose the idea, saying it would unfairly restrict younger patrons from participating in other activities the bars offer, while other bar managers believe it would help them prevent underage drinking.

Shooting reported early Sunday at Carrollton Avenue gas station

A teen was shot several times around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the Shell gas station at 3101 S. Carrollton Avenue, according to a news alert from the NOPD Second District. The boy was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition after the shooting, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Second District detectives at 658-6020 or CrimeStoppers at 822-1111 to leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward.

Owen Courreges: Counting the jobs — all of them

New Orleans received a much-needed bit of positive economic news last week as the General Electric finance division announced that it would be opening an information technology office here, bringing an estimated 300 jobs in this city. GE also claimed that the office would lead to 301 “‘indirect jobs’” around New Orleans (which is a bit more dubious because it seems to assume that every new employee will create at least one additional job, as if each will hire their own personal assistant).

In any event, this news was especially good because it fit the narrative announced by Reuters news service last December – that New Orleans is becoming a “Silicon Valley on the Bayou.” Continue reading »

By now the streets have all been swept clean, the costumes put away, the restorative concoctions mixed and drunk, and the beads mostly fallen from the trees. Wet, chaotic, and unpredictable though it may have been, Carnival was no less fun for it, and as we gingerly ease into Lent it’s worth looking back on all the good times that we had.

Since we still have a few restorative concoctions left to drink, here are a few highlights of the Uptown parades in absolutely no order whatsoever.
