The citizens of New Orleans are shell-shocked, no pun intended, by the highest homicide rate in more than 25 years. Armed robberies have also skyrocketed. Numbed by the ongoing crime wave, residents are no longer surprised when they hear gunshots. After multiple shots rang out last Friday afternoon (Dec. 23) at Rouses on Baronne Street, people across the city were astounded by the brazen act of violence that took the life of comedian and social media sensation Brandon “Boogie B” Montrell.

Miss Shirley’s on Magazine keeps the spirit of a neighborhood Chinese restaurant

A new Chinese restaurant on Magazine Street has a familiar family at its helm. Miss Shirley’s opened on Dec. 1 in the space that was occupied by Jung’s Golden Dragon II. Jung’s Golden Dragon, which opened in Metairie in 1977 before relocating Uptown in 2010, closed in May when the owner, Jung Tan, retired. Miss Shirley’s is named for co-owner and hostess Shirley Lee.

Police blotter: Three shootings, armed robbery in Sixth District

Four people were injured Uptown in three shootings since Sunday (Dec. 25) and a woman was held up at gunpoint, the New Orleans Police Department reported. Police learned of a shooting Tuesday night (Dec. 27) after a victim showed up at a local emergency room with a gunshot wound, the NOPD said in an email. The shooting occurred at Felicity Street and Baronne Street around 9:45 p.m.

New Year’s Day second-line calls for end to violence

The Perfect Gentlemen and the Brasshoppers social aid and pleasure clubs will host a New Year’s Day second-line — while calling for an end to the violence in the city. Da Truth Brass Band will provide the soundtrack for the first second-line of 2023 on Sunday (Jan. 1). The second-line’s theme is “Help Us Save Us,” aimed at addressing the deadly violence that continues to rank New Orleans as one of the most murderous cities in America. Travis Lyons, with the Perfect Gentlemen Social Aid and Pleasure Club and one of the event’s lead organizers, offered his perspective: “I travel all over the country, and no matter where I go, New Orleans continues to make the national news for the murders and violence that occur here,” he said.

Christmas Eve fire breaks out in Irish Channel home

A two-alarm fire damaged an Irish Channel home on Christmas Eve, the New Orleans Fire Department reported. Firefighters rescued a dog from the home, the NOFD said. Man killed in Central City double shooting

A shooting Thursday (Dec. 22) left one man dead and another injured on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulvard, the New Orleans Police Department reported. Around 8 p.m. Sixth District officers responded to a call of a shooting in the 2700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, near Magnolia Street. Upon arrival, they discovered two adult male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
