Viewpoint: The four teens must bear responsibility for their actions in deadly carjacking

The family of Linda Frickey visited her grave this week, a year after the 73-year-old was brutally killed in a Mid-City carjacking. “We want justice for our family member, but it’s not just for Linda. We want this for all elderly people. For all the victims of  juvenile crime,” said Kathy Richard, Frickey’s sister-in-law. 

Three of the Frickey Four — the teenagers who laughed in Frickey’s face as she bled to death on the North Pierce Street on March 21, 2022 — are expected to go to trial in April. Lenyra Theophile, one of the four defendants in the case, was found to be incompetent and too depressed to stand trial.

Police blotter: Sexual assault and attempted robbery in Irish Channel, robbery in Central City, two shootings in Hoffman Triangle

Two shootings in the Hoffman Triangle neighborhood, a robbery in Central City, and a sexual assault and attempted robbery in the Irish Channel were reported this week by the New Orleans Police Department. A woman in the Irish Channel fought back against a man who sexually assaulted and tried to rob her, according to the NOPD. The 40-year-old victim was assaulted in the 1000 block of Seventh Street on Thursday (March 16) at about 9:35 p.m., police said. The assailant then demanded her property but fled after she fought back. A man was robbed early on Thursday at Baronne Street and Washington Avenue.

Police seek suspect in string of burglaries

The New Orleans Police Department is searching for a suspect a business burglary that occurred in Gert Town. The incident occurred Sunday (March 12) around 5:15 a.m. in the 3100 block of Fern Street. This same man is a suspect in burglary in the 600 block of South Carrollton Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. the same day. The suspect was last seen wearing a dark-colored hooded jacket, black ski mask, with red stitching around the mouth, and dark-colored pants and gloves. Man shot to death on Central City street

A man was fatally shot in a burst of gunfire Saturday night (March 11) in Central City. Around 10 p.m. Sixth District officers responded to a call reporting a shooting in the 1900 block of Josephine Street, near Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard. Upon arrival they discovered an adult male suffering from an undetermined number of gunshot wounds. The victim, later identified as Langston E. Lewis, had been shot while standing outside. Lewis, 33, died at the scene.

Police seeking suspect in theft of Shih Tzu named Nola (with video)

A white Shih Tzu named Nola was stolen Sunday (March 5) outside of her home in the Dixon neighborhood. Police are now asking the public’s assistance in locating the dog and identifying the suspect. Nola’s owner let her outside her home in the 9200 block of Palmetto Street. After finding the dog was gone, the owner checked surveillance video, shown below, and observed a man taking Nola at 12:22 p.m.

NOPD seeking suspect in theft of catalytic converter

The New Orleans Police Department is reaching out for public assistance in an investigation of a catalytic converter stolen in the Audubon-Riverside area. On Feb. 10 at about 1:15 a.m., a man arrived in the 200 block of Eleonore Street driving the sport utility vehicle pictured above.  He then climbed under a Toyota Tundra and removed the catalytic converter before fleeing in the SUV. Man shot to death in Washington Avenue driveway

A shooting in Central City on Tuesday (Feb 28) left a man dead, according to the New Orleans Police Department. Sixth District officers responded to a call reporting a shooting in the 2300 block of Washington Avenue around 3:25 p.m. When at the scene, officers found the victim in a driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services. The Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Timothy Wells, 29. Wells died of gunshot wounds.

Man killed in Hoffman Triangle double shooting

A man was killed in a double shooting Sunday night (Feb. 26) in the Hoffman Triangle, according to the New Orleans Police Department. Officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 2500 block of South Derbigny, near Third Street, at 9:08 p.m. discovered two men suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services medics pronounced one victim dead at the scene. The other victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Man fatally shot in Riverbend area

A man was shot to death Friday evening (Feb. 24) in the Riverbend, the New Orleans Police Department reported
Just before 6 p.m., Second District officers responded to a call reporting shots fired in the 800 block of Cambronne Street, near the river. They found a unresponsive man with an  undetermined number of gunshot wounds. He died at the scene. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Darron Washington, 31.
