Police blotter: Carjacking, attempted homicide, armed robbery, purse snatching

Two women were robbed this week in separate incidents on Uptown streets, according to the New Orleans Police Department. Another survived an attempted homicide, and a fourth woman was carjacked. The carjacking occurred Wednesday night in the 4100 block of South Carrollton Avenue. The victim was sitting in her vehicle at about 11:35 p.m. when a man approached and showed a gun, demanding that she get out of the car. The victim complied, and the gunman fled with another man in the her red 2019 Hyundai Elantra with Florida license plate LDDW65.

Man found shot to death on Louisiana Avenue

A man was fatally shot on Louisiana Avenue on Tuesday night (Aug. 30), the New Orleans Police Department reported. Officers were called to the 2200 block of Louisiana, near Loyola Avenue, at 8:34 p.m. They found Kerry Spears suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medical responders declared Spears dead at the scene. He was 31.

Not just a little red truck, Petite Rouge is also a little red cafe

Petite Rouge got its start as a little red coffee truck that’s now familiar at events and festivals. But it’s not just a nomad in a vintage Citroen van. Since 2018, Petite Rouge Café has also been serving the Uptown and college crowd at 3146 Calhoun St. Owner Julie Anne Pieri started the business with her partner Kurt Schmiederer. She was an art major at the University of New Orleans and has taught children art, taught English in Japan, and worked in the service industry.

Cantrell recall organizers collecting signatures at Ms. Mae’s on Magazine

Uptown voters will have a chance today (Aug. 28) to sign a recently filed recall petition to oust Mayor LaToya Cantrell from office. Organizers will collect signatures at Ms. Mae’s Bar, 4336 Magazine St., at Napoleon Avenue, from 2 to 6 p.m. The Ms. Mae’s “signin’ party”  is the first event in the recall effort. Belden “Noonie Man” Batiste, an activist and frequent long-shot candidate, and Eileen Carter, Cantrell’s former social media manager and the sister of former state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, filed the petition Friday (Aug. 26) with the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office.

Suspects sought in reckless driving of ATVs on Carrollton and Earhart

The New Orleans Police Department is requesting assistance from the public in locating and identifying multiple suspects seen operating non-street legal vehicles recklessly on city streets on Aug. 21. At about 5:50 p.m., the suspects pictured below were observed operating multiple ATVs and off-road dirt bikes in a reckless manner near the South Carrollton Avenue and Earhart Boulevard. The vehicles were observed to be traveling northbound on South Carrollton Avenue and ran a red light at the intersection. Suspect arrested in Hollygrove shooting, burglary

The NOPD arrested a suspect Michael Tobias, 32, in the investigation of a shooting that occurred on Aug. 21 in Hollygrove. A 60-year-old man was shot during a suspected burglary in the the 8400 block of Palm Street. The police report stated that the victim was shot at about 8:15 a.m., when a man began firing during a confrontation. The Emergency Medical Service took the 60-year-old to the hospital to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

Hoffman Triangle sees two deadly shootings in one day

Two fatal shootings were reported in Hoffman Triangle neighborhood on Friday (Aug. 26). The first occurred mid-day in the 2800 block of South Johnson Street. At about 1:25 pm., officers responding to a call found a man lying on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene and pronounced him dead.
